This contest is now closed. I want to thank everyone who participated. You all made it a lot of fun! Congratulations to our winner, Patti Thiele! She has won an autographed copy of Melanie Dobson’s new book, Love Finds You in Homestead, Iowa and an Amish-made wall hanging. A new contest will be starting soon!
I have a guest blogger today—Melanie Dobson. She’s the author of the recently released Love Finds You in Homestead, Iowa, a novel set in the 1800s in the Amana Colonies. If you enjoy Amish fiction, I think you’ll enjoy reading Melanie’s book about the Amana Colonies. I did.
Here’s Melanie Dobson, sharing an account of her first night in an Old Order Amish home.
`
What would I say? The question haunted me as the town lights faded away along with the electrical wires and traffic on a country road near Sugarcreek, Ohio. I was on my way to the home of Eli and Mary, an Old Order Amish couple, but even though I grew up in the hills of Amish country, I’d never actually spent much time with an Amish family and certainly had never spent the night in an Amish home. On this research trip, I wanted to find out what delighted an Amish woman’s heart, but I knew the answer to that question wasn’t in the asking. It was in the discovery. And I wasn’t sure how to discover it.
`
In my ignorance, I’d already made up my mind what Old Order Amish woman would be like on the outside—judgmental, stern, and certainly not accepting of an English woman like me who thrived on cell phone service and WiFi. But after I drove into Eli and Mary’s snowy yard that evening, Mary greeted me with a wide smile before I stepped out of my car. She guided me to my room in their large basement. Instead of making me feel like an outsider, she opened the gas-powered refrigerator and pulled out a bowl filled with apples, grapes, and bananas along with fresh pastries she’d purchased for me to eat. In that moment, I felt like a welcomed guest in her home.
`
As we poured hot water over bags of chamomile tea, Eli wandered down to the basement, and in the quietness of the evening, the three of us talked about their eight grown children and my two girls and about my upcoming novel set in Amish country and how Mary and Eli visited the beach in North Carolina many years ago with a vanload of Amish friends. Eli told me about the waterline they’d connected to their son’s home next door, and Mary’s eyes lit up as she described the challenging new puzzle she’d been working on before I arrived.
`
The longer we talked and snacked, the more comfortable we all became. I pulled out my laptop to show them pictures of my girls, and my photos of Hawaii and California and Oregon’s Mt. Hood mesmerized Eli. Mary was fascinated by the workings of the computer.
`
When the conversation slowed, I took a deep breath and told Mary that I’m terrible at putting together puzzles, but if she wanted the little help I could offer, I’d love to work with her. She sprung up from her chair, questioning to see if I was sincere. When I assured her that I was, she told me we had to finish by nine o’clock so she and Eli could go to bed. Nine was fine with me.
`
At the kitchen table, Mary and I poured over the thousand tiny pieces that were supposed to form a Thomas Kincaid picture, and on that dark winter evening, I discovered that Mary was clearly passionate about puzzles. With succinct direction, she assigned me portions to put together. The flowers. The chimney. Parts of the border. Even though my fingers were much, much slower than hers, it was an honor to work alongside her as she deliberated and persisted until she found the right matches for every piece.
`
Eli snored in the chair beside us, and behind us, a clock played classical music every hour. Nine o’clock passed, and Mary ignored the late hour. She was focused on the pieces in front of her, and we quietly cheered each other on. When the clock chimed again, it was ten o’clock.
`
“We have to finish this window before we go to bed,” Mary said, fire in her words and her eyes.
I nodded. “Let’s finish the window.”
`
Sifting through the hundreds of pieces yet to find a match, we slowly uncovered the glass panes and window frame.
`
The evening ended when the window was complete though I believe Mary could have stayed up all night if she didn’t have to leave for service at sunrise. She woke her husband long after ten, and I wandered back down to my quilted bed under the kitchen and sat by the furnace, thinking about how much I’d enjoyed my evening with her.
`
It didn’t matter that I wore jeans and a sweater and Mary wore a blue dress and white bonnet. It didn’t matter that our backgrounds and our present day worlds were so very different. Even though she’d chosen a plain lifestyle, her talents were anything but plain. God created her with a determination to create order out of chaos. Beauty even, out of ashes. Although I don’t usually enjoy puzzles, I was caught up in her joy and enthusiasm for piecing together a complex picture that evening. It was a delight for me to see beyond my new friend’s plain attire and glimpse just a bit into the passion of her heart.
`
Cindy here again ~ Melanie spent last summer learning about the passions and heritage of the Amana women in the late 1800s before she wrote her latest historical novel, Love Finds You in Homestead, Iowa. I read that book and really enjoyed it. You can find it at your local bookstore, or you can order it online through Barnes & Noble, Borders, Books-A-Million, CBD, or Amazon.

I love to read the books about the Amish. Can’t wait to read this one! Love hearing about what new is available out there to read. This book by Melanie sounds like it will be really good.
I have enjoyed many stories written about the Amish, and would like to add this one to the group. In addition, they do some really beautiful quilting!
I am thrilled to have yet another author of Amish stories. I can’t seem to get enough of the plain life. The Amish and Menonites are so lovely and honest and family oriented. I am enthralled with the Amish life sytle. I just love Amish people and their unshakable faith. I have respect for plain life and the Amish and Menonites. One day I am going to visit a Amish community. I would thoughly love to win a book and wall hanging. Thank you for letting us read about these wonderful people.
I’ve also enjoyed the hospitality of the Old Order Amish in Sugarcreek–while researching my debut novel, Love Finds You In Sugarcreek, Ohio. I went to their home, worried that I would say all the wrong things–and ended up having one of the best times of my life as we laughed and talked around a lamp-lit kitchen table. The Amish, I found, at least with the family I visited–have a REALLY good sense of humor. My sides ached the next day. So unexpected.
Sounds like something I’d like to read. I’ve really enjoyed Cindy’s books and can’t wait for the newest one!
I would love to win the book and Amish hanging.
What a joy to be able to visit the home of the Amish. To really see how they live and sit down and talk with them is one of my desire in life. I have enjoyed reading about them for years, since my mother-in-law introduced me to my first book. Now my daughter and I both share Amish books back and forth.
Thank you for entering me in the contest.
Sounds like another winning author! I am sure I will enjoy her novels as well!

This is really strange, i cheeked a book out of the Library yesterday that is about the Amana Colonies. I had never heard of them. I had to go and look at the book, to make sure it wasn’t the same one of Melanie’s.

I love books about women, period. And to think that AMish women are different is an error, they are like “english” women, some are happy, some are not, some are pleasant, some are not, some are sophisticated in their own way. Irregardless, I think all of them have a serenity in that they have less “tech” distractions..all in all, they are marveolously creative people…
Cindy…so glad to be on your facebook too. I am almost through your book The Sound of Sleigh Bells …and I cannot wait to see what Beth is going to do about Jonah. I was so glad you had her go back after her inital “shock” of meeting him and knowing who he was. I also would love to win this contest…how great that we have another author of Amish Fiction. I have read almost everything I can get my hands on. I will go looking for this book too. I also am eagerly awaiting your new book…blessings..

I just love anything amish. When I was expecting our second child my husband an I went to visit Landcaster. We road around out in the country and came to a house that had a sign out for quilts for sale. I could not find what I was looking for I wanted 2 baby crib quilts that did not match exactly but were close. The dear lady said she would make them and send them to me. She would not let me leave all the money. She would write me a letter and let me know how much money she needed and at the end she gave me the amount of the final payment and two weeks late the most beautiful baby quilts arived. what a great experience. What wonderful and pure people they are.

Another author to add to my Amish list. I am so interested in this culture. Planning to visit Berlin OH at the end of August. Amish life in these days has its calling. Sometimes I wish I could be part of it. Would love to have your book and the wall hanging.
This sounds like a book I would enjoy
… Thank you for the chance to win it… Blessings,
Please enter me in this contest. Thanks.. You can also find me on Facebook.
Please enter me! Thanks!
I would love to win both the book and the wall hanging. I hope to someday own an Amish quilt. I love reading Amish stories. Maybe it’s the longing for a simplier life where time doesn’t rush ahead. A time to really listen to God through working with your hands.
So exciting to have yet another “go to” author for Amish fiction. Horray!
