Amish Letters & Contest

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 11:27 am

I received another letter from one of my Amish friends today. As I handled the long white envelope that arrived in my mailbox, I thought about how it had been in a home built in the 1700s and addressed to me in the same manner as if it were the 1700s—by candlelight. I slit open the envelope with my letter opener and unfolded the crisp, white paper with a smile of anticipation on my face. Seeing the handwritten words and knowing that I have in my hand the opportunity to “visit” with my friend always touches my heart.

E-mail, texts, Twitter, Facebook, etc. are wonderful. I enjoy those too. We can stay in touch with family and friends no matter where we, or they, are. But how often do we save or print out e-mails? Most of the new communication technology promotes brevity.

I poured myself a cup of coffee and moved to my recliner, ready to absorb the sights, sounds, and aromas radiating from those pages in my hand.

Even in this age of instant communication, there is something special about getting mail that you can hold in your hand, knowing that someone cares about you enough to sit down, take pen in hand, and share his or her life, thoughts, and feelings, then seal and stamp the letter or card and take it to the post office.

Do you have any special letters or cards you have saved that you enjoy rereading? Handmade cards from your children when they were little, with misspelled words and crooked hearts pasted with too much glue? Maybe a collection of special letters from a loved one, tied with an old-fashioned ribbon?

I could never give away the letters that have passed between my Amish friends and myself. But I can share one part of a letter I received recently. It read: Subject: AMISH VIRUS You have just received the Amish Virus. Since we do not have electricity nor computers, you are on the honor system. Please delete all of your files. Denki!

Another thing I can share is an Amish-made goody.  I have a quilted wall hanging—sewn with the same care and thoughtfulness as the written letters I receive.

If you’d like to be entered into the drawing for the 17-by-18-inch wall hanging, all you need to do is leave a comment below.

If you’re reading this on one of my Facebook pages or Amazon or elsewhere, you need to pop over to my Web site, http://www.cindywoodsmall.com, and leave a comment on this blog entry.

The winner of the last Plain Talk Blog contest is Sandy Moritz of California. Sandy won an autographed book, a set of Amish-made potholders, and a box of Amish-made gift cards. Congrats, Sandy!

Note added by Cindy on March 12–WOW at the beautiful notes you all have written! I’ve been so moved by them, and I know many others have been too. THANK YOU!!  I forgot to mention when the contest ends. I’ll draw a winner on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 and notify her (or him) via e-mail.

    Hi Cindy,
I can hardly wait for the second book in the Ada’s House series to be released. It was so nice to meet you last fall in Cummings at your book signing. I have enjoyed reading all your books and sharing them with my family and friends.

  7. Jamie Says:

I appreciate handwritten letters and cards. I think there is a certain sense of them being “personal” when they are handwritten. I have several birthday cards that were written before my daddy passed away. I treasure them. When I come across his handwriting it makes my heart smile.

  8. Kerry Sutherland Says:

Can’t wait for Bridge to come out in September – I haven’t been able to put down any of your books. I have to sit and read them straight through! I wish you could write faster . . . ha ha, no pressure!

    Kerry

  9. Beth Brase Says:

I am almost done with The Sound Of Sleigh Bells and I am loving it! Can’t wait to see how it will end!

  10. Rose Blackard Says:

I love reading your books, I also love the Amish people and culture. Living in Florida I miss seeing the Amish people. We went to Amish country when we lived in Pennsylvania. I would love to win. thanks

  11. Regina Mock Says:

My children are all grown now with families of their own. I have saved all the homemade cards they have made for me for all different occasions, also the precious Christmas decorations they made at Sunday School and School. Every once in a while I take them all out and take a trip down memory lane. I have 8 grandchildren and I save all the cards and Christmas decorations they make for me also. God is good!

  12. Shayla Villines Says:

I would love to win this!!! I absolutely love reading books about the Amish culture. Can’t wait to read more!

  13. Karen Says:

I have kept quite a few letters, but one that is very special and I keep in my Bible is one my Mom painstakingly wrote to me when I was in college after she had what we call her “massive” stroke. (I still have Christmas cards she had signed after her stroke that were extras and not sent out.) I also have stored in my Bible a letter that my “little brother” who lived across the street sent me when he was away at camp. I am 5 years older than him and he and his older brother adopted me as their sister. I was also their babysitter. It’s always nice receiving cards and letters in the mail! I like the Amish Virus! Funny!

  14. Emma Bedford Says:

I so miss the long letters I use to receive from my mother when I was in college or any time I was away from home. I have said many times that letter writing is a lost art. Email is great, but you cannot beat opening that mail box and receiving something besides bills. Something that truly shows someone was thinking of just you.

  15. Christine Josephson Says:

My mother was the last of the letter writers that I know and use to send letters before her stroke but now at 91 she is unable to write. The only way I can communicate with her since I live many miles away is by writing letters. I do miss her letters. Have ordered your second book after reading “The Hope of Refuge” can’t wait till Sept. I love the way you write.

  16. Amanda Says:

While the age of technology is amazing, it is sad to know how the “art” of old time communication has gone out the window. Thank you for the reminder.

  17. Sherry Hill Says:

After my grandfather died I sent my grandmother a letter in the mail almost everyday. She would always wait on the porch for the mailman. She eventually got a computer and learned to email. We would write every day and the last two years of her life I saved those letters only to have my computer crash! God blessed me with a computer tech that was able to retrieve most of them but it was a long process. I have them printed out now and love reading them because she had the funniest way of saying things. One example was if she stubbed her toe she would say, “that could about make a person loose their religion!” but she never swore!

  18. Tonya Huttenstine Says:

I have a box full of cards/letters I have received over the years. Every so often i go through and read several of them over and over. I agree, there is something special about a hand written letter, card, note from a friend or loved one. Can’t wait for the next book, and the wall hanging is beautiful. Congrats to whoever wins it! Thank you for sharing your love of Amish culture with the rest of us through your books.

  19. Sheri Says:

What a beautiful quilt. Thank you for all you do and share with your community of readers.

  20. Lisa Cantrell Says:

Your books touch my heart in a special way. I can’t wait to read more! I have gotten some of my friends hooked on your books also…I’m getting quite the collection. You have a way of making me want to be in the book right there with the characters. I love my “snail-mail” also. Seems so much more personal! ~ :)

  21. Katrina Taylor Says:

    Mrs. Cindy,
I thank you so much for sharing this with us. There is not a day that goes by that my husband and I do not discuss the Amish. They are a wonderful and loving group of people whom I wish to meet one day. We could all take lessons from them.
My most prized and special heart felt items are my birthday and valentine’s cards from my Daddy. I have had them for years and will eventually give them to my son. I lost my Daddy on April 12, 1999 just 2 months and 6 days before he was able to walk me down the aisle to the man of my dreams. My Daddy was the kind of person who never hurt anyone and would do anything for you. Everyone loved my Daddy and still only has good things to say about him.
As you can tell, I am a Daddy’s girl at the age of 37 and I always will be. He taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to and for that I am thankful. I miss him so much but, there is no way that I would wish him back with me to refight for his life. Just knowing that he is in Heaven gives me peace.

  22. Lourdes Montes Says:

I actually still send out encouregment cards about every other week to friends & family. It’s so nice to see how happy they get when receiving them.

  23. Brenda Veinotte Says:

I would love to win this. Thank you for the reminder of how important the written word is in communicating. I have letters saved from grandparents and friends. These letters are very precious to me.

  24. Susanne Scheppmann Says:

I am here! Hope to win–it’s beautiful.

  25. Joeli Says:

Letters from friends and loved ones are so precious to me. I even have letters that my Mom sent to my Dad when I was just a baby and my Dad was away, preparing to move his family to where his career had taken him. Cherish those who are dear to you and don’t forget to tell them you love them each and every day. There is no guarantee of tomorrow. God Bless you all!

  26. Linda Pounds Says:

I really love reading about the Amish culture. I would love to win the wall hanging. Visited my brother in NJ and he took me to Pennsylvania to visit the Amish community. Loved it. I want to go back. Thank you for making us feel we are right there when reading your books.

  27. Michelle Rayburn Says:

Cindy, one of my friends is so into the Sisters of the Quilt series right now that she is losing sleep to read at night. She’s reading on her lunch breaks too. I’d love to win the quilt to give to her as a gift. Please enter me in the drawing.

I do love reciving hand writtin letters too. I get them from friends and family every now and then, it’s so much more exciting than getting an email and I never throw a letter away. Thank you so much for your books!

  35. Shirley Bottoms Says:

I love your books and can’t put it down, when I start a new one. At night, I often stay awake until I finish a book. I seem to just blend in with the story and hate for it to end. I love the series books, so I always have another to look forward to reading. Please enter me for the wall hanging. I would love to win.

  36. Cheryl Givens Says:

I love your books and I almost rolled off my computer chair with laughter when I read the Amish Virus segment you posted. I have shared that with everyone I have talked to. I love getting letters from friends and I have a stack of letters from pen pals that I have. They send cards as well. I have a couple of cards that I will never part with that have such wonderful words from them to comfort my soul when I was suffering. I would love to have Amish pen pals if I could find some. I love reading about their way of life and I would love to stand in an Amish kitchen early in the morning when the baking is going on. I can just sit back and smell the aroma. I love your books and am in the middle of one now that has made me laugh and cry. you bring so much into your books that make them hard to put down. Thank you Cindy. I love quilts too.

  37. Kari Says:

I love the warm, homey feeling I get from reading your Amish stories, and how you make the characters real. Keep writing!!

  38. Lindsay Says:

I miss getting handwritten letters! I used to be so excited to receive them and would always hang on to them! I used to keep them in my Bible and that way when I turned to certain passages, I would see the letter again…I recently cleaned out my Bible and I miss the smile that naturally came when I turned to a passage with a letter from a friend or loved one! Letters are truly treasures and I still received handwritten letters in the mail! I know this is fictional, but when I read Karen Kingsbury’s Baxter family series, I was so touched that the dad, John, kept all of the letters that Elizabeth had written to him from the very beginning of their relationship–how amazing to be able to go back and read the persons thoughts and feel like you are close to them again even after they’re gone…that’s almost better than old photographs!
Your books are amazing as well and I always wait for your next releases with great anticipation!

  39. June Deese Says:

Hi Cindy, as i read your post on your friend writing to, i was reminded of what the lady at the post office told me the other day..She said
it want be long before there want be any mail and i would have a job…Its so true with all the tech.stuff they have now..like the web cams. I can see my grandkids all away cross the country(i live in S.C. and they live in WA)…enter me in your drawing for the wall hanging.thanks

  40. Jessica B Says:

I love getting hand written letters as well. I remember when I was little how fun it was to go to the mail box. Now when I go, it is nothing but bills. Oh well. One of our family’s most prized possesions is a box of letters my great-grandparents exchanged before and during WWII. I am hoping to start my son with a pen pal soon. Thanks for a wonderful post. I’m glad that I’m not the only one who puts so much thought into things as simple as a letter from a dear friend!

  41. Jessie Says:

Cindy, your books inspire me to be a better person… I am encouraging all the young girls I know to read them. I gift them to my grands because I think the life lesson to be learned from them can help make our world a better, more forgiving place to live. We can certainly learn from the Amish!

  42. aimee jinks Says:

i love reading your status’s and your blogs. it’s as if i am right there with you, experiencing the same thing! i love to read your books. i am also leaving a comment to enter the contest. thanks, aimee

  43. Melanie Weaver Says:

Hi Cindy, I very much love your books and have shared them with my 88 yr old aunt who has read some of them twice before giving them back. I also love written letters and have one from my niece, who is now 16, she was 7 yrs old and on Feb 14, 2001 she wrote Hi Aunt Melanie, I love you and miss you very much. Last year on Feb 14, I was going thru a box and found this letter and copied it and gave it to her. It is so sentimental and I am glad I found it on that day of all days. It made feel great, just like your books do as I am reading them. Cannot wait for more. Please enter me in the drawing for the wall hanging thank you

  44. Joan Main Says:

In 1907,my granmother was a very young girl being raised by her aunt.her own mother was in a hospital suffering from consumption(TB)The aunt wrote a letter to her telling her the news of her little girl(my Grandmother). She also writes about Revival meetings going on at their church (Brethren in Christ) which back then was very much like the Amish or Old order Mennonite.I treasure this letter and will never part with it She closed the letter by saying “Eli is going to hitch up to go after pa and will take this letter along,as the snow is too deep for me to walk up.”(to the mailbox?) “here is a kiss from Dolly x ,she kissed that spot & you will have to kiss it to get it off.”.How precious this is to me.

  45. Kelly Hunt Says:

Letters are such an intimate thing, and quickly becoming a lost art form. When I receive a hand written letter, I feel connected to the sender in a way that cannot be conveyed in an e-mail, or text.

As a girl, I learned good penmanship, and sometimes would spritz my special letters with a bit of perfume before I put my hand to it. To do it afterward would make the ink run. I wonder if todays teenagers know that?

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on letters, and we all should make a special effort to keep the art alive.

Your a real blessing Cindy. I love your books, and your blog!

    Kelly

  46. Elaine Jordan Says:

I still treasure my handwritten letters & cards from my Grandma who also taught me to quilt. Grandma loved God more than anything else & made sure to share her love of God with everyone around her. She died 2 months before my wedding, almost 31 yrs. ago – but when I look at her letters & quilts I can still feel her near.

  47. Sherra Galbraith Says:

I love it when friends and loved ones take the time to actually write a letter. These days it happens far too infrequently. I have saved every note card written to me from my adorable husband and I love to take them out and think back to when I received them. What a precious gift from God he is. I would love to have an Amish pen pal also. Maybe I can settle for an Amish wall hanging instead…****wink**** :)

  48. Barbara Ritter Says:

Thanks for the wonderful stories! I enjoy them so much. It is still so wonderful to hold books in my hands to read them. I don’t understand this new technology of reading books on a computer. It is not as rewarding to me. God Bless you as you continue writing for Him!

  49. Karen Pollard Says:

We spent last Sunday driving through a small Amish community in the western part of Kentucky; around Marion. I loved seeing the signs at the ends of driveways that say, “brown eggs, harness repair, bulk foods, woven rugs”, etc. The cottage industry is in full bloom there.

  50. Annette Clark Says:

Can’t wait for your new book!

  51. Ashley Kingery Says:

I do the shoebox ministry every year at Christmas time. Last year I received a letter from Zimbabwe from the mother of a little girl who got my shoebox. The little girl is a month older than my oldest child. She drew a picture for my children and they love it. I cherish that letter very much.

  52. Maria Says:

I have letters from my grandmother who lived in India. When she died I was the only grandchild, but soon after other grandchildren came and I was able to share with them the letters that our grandmother wrote. It had details of her day to day activities and what was happening in the family at that time. It gave them an idea of who she was. Now its been 23 years since she passed away and I am able to hold a piece of my grandmother that was especially for me.

  53. Jennifer Holliday Says:

I have a box full of handwritten letters and cards that my husband had sent me when we were dating in college (we went to different colleges). I love having them to look at again and again. Even today, we will often forgo the Hallmark card on a special occasion and write each other a handwritten letter. I enjoy them much more than the cheesy Hallmark cards.

  54. lanore lewis Says:

Hi Cindy, Jujst wanted to Thank you for sharing a little bite of the Amish with us. Love your books. =-D

  55. Gail Black Says:

I save all handwritten mail from my family members. That includes cousins and all extended family. I also include thank you notes and anything that is hand written. I am afraid this is a dying art that we will dearly miss one day. Sadly, the age of electronics, while speeding up things for us considerably sometimes, will cause the younger generations to totally miss out on the personal mail. They will never really know what they are missing! My niece told me once that her heart skipped a beat when she looked at personal mail that her father (my brother) had written. He passed away when she was 7 yrs old. They later had a house fire. All his personal writing was lost. As an adult, she finally saw his handwriting and we both cried at how special that was for her.

  56. Debra Meyer Says:

I find it very interesting to learn about other cultures. Sometimes I envy the Amish and their simpler way of life!! Keep the books coming and God Bless!

  57. Judi Says:

I have a box full of hand written letters as well as some special items my children have made over the years. They are now 24 and 21. I just love to look over the memories…just some special times!

  58. Mrs Tina Rice Says:

I enjoy getting letters in the mail too.

When my husband was in the Navy and stationed in Spain-before and after we were married (1970′s)-, he sent me lots of letters and cards, even poems that he wrote himself; one time he had run out of paper and wrote me a letter on an opened-up paper bag-that letter meant sooo much to me. I still have all his letters and cards, I like to sit and re-read each one. They are precious to me!

Living in Maryland we are very close to Pennsylvania and often visit the Amish in Lancaster county Pennsylvania and go through their shops and restaurants, they have beautiful quilts and other hand crafted items. We make a day of it when we go, usually in the spring through fall. I have always wanted to ride in one of their buggies, but haven’t had a chance yet…one day I hope to do that.

The quilt offered in this contest is beautiful as are all their quilts. Quilting takes a lot of work and patience. I used to make quilts when I was younger, haven’t in a few years now as my fingers don’t want to work right (osteoarthritis).

Love your books Cindy! I like to re-read them over and over again and can’t wait until your next books come out to add to my collection. My husband, sons and I are avid readers and have so many books that we fixed up our spare room into a library (and a bedroom for my 5 year old grandson
Zachary, for when he comes to sleep-over). Zachary is so fascinated with all those books. Of course, we have lots of books for him too on a shelf just for him, he loves to be read to and is now reading to us!

Blessings to you, have a great day!

  59. Trisha Neely Says:

This is a very beautiful wall hanging! I love your books, they are so heartfelt and when I read them I am transported to the story. I feel so close to your characters, as if they were someone I actually knew. When I finished the Hannah series I was so sad to be saying goodbye to Hannah. Keep up the good work :O)
God’s Many Blessings to you and yours!

  60. Jodi Mason Says:

I keep Christmas and Birthday cards from friends, but especially from relatives. My grandparents have now passed on, and my Christmas with handwritten notes and messages from them are priceless. I always end up crying when I read through them.

  64. Anissa Mundy Says:

  67. Cheryl Callan Says:

I have saved some of the cards over the years from kids and grandkids.. My husband says to weed them out.. No way.. I have been reading Amish books as often as I can and different Authors but you are my favorite. Your books really touch me…Can’t wait for the next one…

  68. nikki patton Says:

I love love love your books. When are you going to come to olathe, kansas?

  69. Michelle McClory Says:

As a mom of four, I make an attempt to save all of their artwork and cards. I particularly enjoy the ones where they spelled their name backwards or drew a picture of us together. I will always treasure the memories that go along with a look through the boxes I store them in.

  70. Nancy Greenhouse Says:

It is sad that cards and letter, even postcards are not being sent anymore..I save everything my son ever wrote me and have some old notes and letters from an old dear friend from high school. I am sad to think the mothers of today will not have as much to save..why would you want to save an email anyway.
I love your writing and can’t wait for the next book!! I love Amish fiction..its such a calming and peaceful existence.

  71. Kathleen Shepherd Says:

Love your books, I have read each one and been transported to each characters life. When I have to put the book down I feel as if I am putting their lifes on hold. Keep writing! God Bless and keep you.

  73. Linda Geertsma Says:

I love your books and am patiently waiting for the next one to be released.
I saved all the cards recieved on the birth of each child, plus I saved all the cards for every occasion the children received the first 5 years of their life.
I am now saving the precious cards and pictures my grandchildren give me. Esp. the homemade ones :)
I live in Ontario and we know quite a few Amish and love to visit with them.
I would love to win this contest, I bought my mother (many years ago) a quilt from an Amish neighbour, but never got one for myself, maybe someday. Please keep the wonderful stories coming. Even my one brother in law borrows all my books to read.:) Linda

  74. Joy Mounce Says:

    Hi Cindy,
It’s so good to be “friends” with you on facebook! That way I get all the latest news on your writings, etc…
I ate with a Senior’s group at the church where I work last month…Dutch Heritage (Amish) Restaurant in Sarasota, Florida. It was great!
I would love to win the quilt!
    Take care and God bless!

  75. kimberly alexander Says:

I love your books and please let your Amish friends know that their works are beautiful

  76. Rhonda Bennett Says:

I love reading books about the Amish way of life. So plain and simple compared to our busy lives. I enjoyed reading about the letter you received from an Amish friend. I worked for the Postal Service for 14 years and never got tired of trying to decipher some of the handwritten addresses on the envelopes so that the letter could be delivered to the right person. There is nothing better than seeing the look on someones face when they receive that letter from a loved one. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  77. Jeannine Reynolds Says:

Cindy, as usual I love reading your posts! I’d love to experience the Amish lifestyle for a day or two just to “regroup”. Thank you for your inspiring words. And the wall hanging is GORGEOUS! I quilt, but nothing like that!!

    Jeannine

  78. Tamra Trantham Says:

We just stopped by 2 Amish stores today in OK. it was so neat. The first one had eight to ten quilts i think. Oh they were beautiful. The other one was at their house it was neat. They live a little different down here.

  79. Barbara Brunson Says:

Cindy I too love receiving letters that have been hand written, it shows that more went into the thought. I remember as a child making all my mothers cards. I would get a pair of my earrings and punch them thru the card and place the back on the other side. That way she had a card and a gift. I was only about 6 years old. I always love having an opportunity to win something from your Amish friends. The hanging is beautiful and the hard work that goes into making them, just makes it even more special.

    Barbara Brunson

  80. Wendy Bailey Says:

I wish there was an Amish community near me. I would love to have an Amish friend. Thanks for offering chances for us to win a piece of the Amish life.

  81. Mara Mittelman Says:

I have most of the cards and letters from my Mom and sister. I love being able to look back and see how our love has grown out the years.

I keep entering your contests and praying that I win one of those beautiful Amish quilts!!

I love your books and your site!

  82. Melinda Says:

I love to receive “real” letters, but they come rarely these days. Before e-mail, I looked forward to going out to the mailbox and finding a letter. Now all I generally have to look forward to is bills and junk mail… and I don’t really look forward to those. E-mail and Facebook are nice, but opening my inbox just isn’t the same as breaking the seal on an envelope and pulling out a folded letter. I do really love that my husband encourages our kids to make cards for me on special occasions. Those homemade cards mean far more than store-bought cards ever could.

Thanks for the opportunity to win that beautiful wall-hanging! It reminds me of the beautiful quilts my Grandma used to make.

  83. Carol Holdstock Says:

I have always been fascinated by the Amish and their way of life. I have read many books about them. some fiction, some non-fiction. We have visited the Lancaster, PA area many times and enjoy it so much. We also have Amish communities in south-western Ontario and since it isn’t far away we go there frequently. They are very hard working people and I admire them. Looking forward to your new book, Cindy.

  84. Melissa @ Anxious for Nothing Says:

Please enter me in the drawing for the wall hanging! Thanks!

  85. Lindy Enlow Says:

I can’t wait for the new book. I have preordered it and will be rereading the first one again before it comes out. Your books are wonderful!

  86. Sandy Moritz Says:

Hello, I am so looking forward to the second book of the Quilt series. After having read the first book, I think of the character Hannah often as I go about my daily activities. It is so interesting to note that when you have read a wonderfully written book how the characters come alive and become a part of yours. Cindy certainly is gifted at doing this.

What a lovely wall hanging! I have done some quilting and have such an appreciation for the gift that one has and the love that they have put into making any quilted item. Whoever wins this wall hanging will have a gift to treasure for many years.

Thank you for the opportunity to be considered.

  87. Lee Jolley Says:

I love this wall hanging.. so beautiful.. I really enjoy your books… thanks

  88. Janet Says:

Handwritten cards and letters are the best! There’s nothing like going out to the mailbox and finding a letter from an old friend or a family member.
Thanks for sharing you talent with all of us.

  89. La Neel Crabtree Says:

I am blessed to have a post card dated Aug.16,1937 from my dad. He and my mom were dating, and he was out of town for some work project. I love the greeting..”Dear Girl”. He tells her that he didn’t have any paper, so he used the postcard. He didn’t know when the work project would be completed, but to look for him when she saw him. His signature is “Shank” which was his nickname. I found the post card when I was going through things after my mother’s death.
Dad died in 1970 at the age of 52. Mom died in 2002. She never remarried because she always said that she and dad were truly soul mates.
My dad was a guy who was 6’6″ but was like a big teddy bear. He will always be “Daddy” to me. The words on the card are fading but just seeing his writing warms my heart. My parents were married June 9, 1939.

  90. Liz Says:

The Amish quilts are beautiful. I really enjoy reading books about the Amish, I find their lifestyle very interesting.

  91. Bessie Hanson Says:

    Hi Cindy,

Love the wallhanging. I appreciate the works of the Amish people so much. There is a part of each person working on the object in each project. It is so much more personable than something that came from a factory. Looking for your books at the library

  92. Margaret Crozier Says:

I do enjoy stories about the Amish and, to some extent, wish life in general was as simple. I have never seen an Amish-made quilt but am awed at the intricacy of hand-made quilts done by friends who must pour love into every stitch… along with some frustration at times, no doubt.

Thank you Cindy for all your stories and sharing of Amish goodies.

  93. judy rees Says:

  94. Catherine Carr Says:

I enjoyed reading your blog and it made me yearn for a simpler time and time with family long gone. It also gave me the idea to ask my husband to take some time to help my precious son (now 13 and still a sweetie) write his thoughts to me. My son has some communication challenges and yet as he grows he is learning the skills to “live in” our society. So far his idea of writing is signing a card and mailing it. Reading your blog has made me realize I need to start teaching him to take the time to write letters to family in other parts of the world. I would like to be entered in your drawing and the rest is up to the Lord. Thanks for sharing your life.

  95. Karla Hanns Says:

I am eagerly awaiting your next book!! I love Amish crafts. They are very talented people. The wall hanging is just gorgeous!! I would love to win it!! I bought a quilt on our last trip to Lancaster PA and hope to bring home a handmade coffee table this year. What wonderful craftspeople the Amish are!!

  96. Mary Hake Says:

My daughters had Amish penpals as girls and still hear from them once in a while. I wrote to their mom sometimes and sent her coupons.

  97. Tina Pinson Says:

It is rather interesting how we’ve stopped exchanging too much of ourselves. We’ll say every silly thing or share some bits of ourselves on line and such, but to have to write a letter by hand and share something more is foreign to some people.

And you’re right, it’s rather sad.

I have letters exchanged between my husband and I when we were dating some 30 years ago. I pull them out and become amazed anew at how starry eyed and in love we were. And how that love has grown over the years. And I will always cherish them.

I also have old poetry and journals from myself. Some of it is pretty hokey indeed. I try not to revise now that I’m older and wiser. (HA)

The old cards and letters from family through the years are wonderful.

The ones from my father who passed away a few years ago, always make me think of happier times. Always make me miss him.

  98. Ruth Swartz Says:

I’m so lucky to have u for my friend and all the lovely thing that u do and say.I lived around the amish’s for yrs. Their homes are just beautiful and the land around it is well kept up. That wall hanger is just gorgeous! I would just love it. Our next trip back (fr Oregon) to PA AND Ohio to see my mom (who will be 95 this yr) and the rest of the family, I’m going to the auction and by one of the amish’s quilt. They’re so beautifully done.Thank You so much for sharing the letters and your life with us. May god bless u.

  99. Susan Says:

  100. Vivian Stadley Says:

I have read many books about the Amish and just can’t describe how much I enjoy them. I grew up in a small community in the mid-west and my family was very poor. We were not Amish but our lifestyle was much like their’s; although we did have electricity. I enjoy your books very much and look forward to reading the newest one.

  101. Kathy Williams Says:

I love handwritten letters—which seem to be disappering with the use of computers and e-mail. I enjoy thinking of my ancestors sitting by lamplight or candlehight, writing letters to loved ones.(I am the family genealogist) I have several old postgcards, written by my paternal grandmoter when she was a schoolteacher, before she married in 1910.
I think the wall-hanging is just lovely and would love to win it. What is the date of the drawing??

  109. Mary Says:

I would love to sign up for the contest. I have read all of your books and think I know Hannah and Paul so well that they are friends of mine. You have a way of writing makes you feel like you are a part of the family and community. The books have been a haven for me at this time of my journey with Christ. 110. Sandy Stover Says:

When my husband fell from the roof last year he and I received many many cards. But the ones that are read over and over are the ones that people wrote themselves. It meant so much to me over this past year. Now that my husband is home It’s nice to have them to look over again.

  111. Rena Gomach Says:

I am almost through with “The Hope of Refuge”, so good I can’t put it down. I hope it ends the way I want it to. I always feel ‘happy in my heart’ when I read one of Cindy’s books, I think it is the peacefulness of the Amish lifestyle that does it to me. Thank you for the continued blessings of your gift.

Getting a hand written letter in this day and time sure is special. It feels good to receive letters from friends and loved ones in the mail. After reading your artical makes me want to go gather up the pen and paper and write some letters myself….maybe some of my friends will read your artical and I’ll receive some letters in the mail, this would be terrific. But what would really be great,to win and receive the wall hanging in the mail.I love the amish and also quilts.Your books are really great, keep up the great work. Thanks for writing such great words and for also going that extra mile.May God Bless You.

  124. Tanya Brown Says:

I have letters from my grandparents that will always mean so much to mean – they are in their shaky handwriting and not in a type-set that is easy to read. Rather it is the squiggly letters that means I must decypher what grandpa and grandma were saying. And when my husband would deploy prior to 9/11 the Internet was not an option so we wrote letters back and forth a lot – it was our way to stay in touch!
I would love to have the Amish made wall hanging for my new office. My husband is building me and my girls a new office to work and study from so that we have an extra room for in the end a parent’s retreat for now maybe a place for the grandbabies to live until an apartment opens up in a month or so.

  125. Dawn Says:

Would love to win the wall hanging. Love your books! Many Blessings, Dawn

  128. Jody Komins Says:

I absolutely love and have all of your Amish books to date and am really looking forward to your new release in September (although I really do not want to rush summer). I would love to win the Amish wall hanging. I am so impressed with the Amish way of life and their love of God and their community. More people need to emmulate their ways. Thanks for your books.

  129. Jody Komins Says:

I thoroughly enjoy (and own) all of your Amish books. I cannot wait for your new release in September (although I do not want to wish summer away). I would love to win the Amish wall hanging. I am so touched by the Amish way of life and their love of God and their community. More of us need to care for one another as they do. Thanks again, Jody

  133. Debbie Feavel Says:

Oh Cindy, how wonderful it was to read about your Amish letters. I have several friends I correspond with through written letter. How I enjoy getting letters in my mail box. It is so much nicer than through the computer. I have even noticed my hand writing improving again since I’ve started writing letters by hand. What a joy.

And oh to have an Amish friend to write to! I would love to be able to have that. I want so much to live a life more like the Amish and my husband and I are working more and more toward that. I think the hardest thing for me to give up would be my wonderful Internet friendships. Since my husband is a Tinsmith hobbiest who adores historical lighting, we would have no problem with that!

    Gods Blessings
    Debbie Feavel

  134. Sandi Says:

I love winning anything, lol. It doesn’t happen much, but I truly would love having the wall hanging. God bless!

    Shirley

  137. Deb Kotula Says:

The one letter I have to this day saved in my daughter’s treasures is one received from her 2nd grade teacher. Karyn is now 26 years old and I still choke up when I read it. We were stationed in Germany when Karyn was between 5 and 9 years old. SHe went to an American School on German soil. This was a very educational, exciting time of her life. Margie Viera was her teacher. And what a wonderful, full of life woman she was. She had a Guffaw for a laugh that had you reeling. An absolute fantastic teacher that Karyn loved. Before we left to come back to the states, my family and Margie went out to dinner as a farewell. We had a wonderful time together in a German restaurant. Then she told us she had breast cancer and undergoing treatments. It almost knocked us over. We got back to the states and received a wonderful (that was her favorite word) letter telling Karyn how she missed her and what a wonderful student she was. Plus a few more things. Karyn treasured that letter for a lot of years. We wrote her a letter back, and a few months later we received a letter from Margie’s sister that she had passed away. It broke our hearts. Karyn cried for days. It is hard for a 9 year old to understand. The day of our last dinner together Margie also gave Karyn a rainbow colored wallet. So for years the letter and wallet stayed together. Now it is in a safe place and every once in a while I come across it, read it and smile remembering Margie and that wonderful laugh. To this day I can just hear her up in heaven having a grand old time with the angels.

  138. Betty Sheehan Says:

I love everything you write including what you say on Facebook. Somehow you make me feel as if I’m in another world…maybe an Amish world where I’d love to visit!! Thanks for taking the time to keep up to everything (Facebook, website, writing etc.) and putting up with us! You’re one of God’s gifts!!

  139. Sharon GIlnack Says:

Please enter me in your contest. I love the old cards that bring back memories of kids, parents and friends.

  140. Mary Raybourn Says:

I’ve made it a point not to do Facebook, Twitter, etc.–only email, and as you have stated, that is just to keep in touch with family. I read the Amish books, not only for enjoyment and relaxation, but there is always a message or two and in some ways it keeps me gounded. At the close of the story, I try to take a little something from what you or another author has written and apply it in some form. Thank you!
    Blessings.

    Mary Raybourn

Gods Blessings to you and yours
    Lois

  143. Rhonda McDermitt Says:

It is the same thing with books, I can’t ever see myself using a Kindle to read a book. I love the smell and feel of each page as I read! I have a hugh tote filled with everything my two boys have ever given me.

  144. Marion Nielsen Says:

Cindy your books are awesome. I feel honoured to have met such a talented writer. God has truely blessed you and inn return us for being able to share in your stories. I have always had a special place in my heart for the Amish people. I go to as many Amish communities as possible. Each time is a new and wonderful experience. My life long dream is to visit and stay a few days at an Amish home. Not as a guest but to actually be part of a family for that special moment in time. If you ever hear of a family willing to make a dream come true let me know. Of course I would pay for my dream. Please keep up the great work. Can’t wait for Sept 7th. Writing from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. God Bless

  145. Nikki Greenwood Says:

That letter from your Amish friend is so funny! I, for one, do a lot of emailing and texting but still get so excited when I see a card or a letter in the mailbox!

I have two small children, a 7 year old son and a 2 1/2 year old daughter, and I keep nearly everything they make for me. One of my favorites is an end of the year keepsake my son made in kindergarten that had his handprints on it and his signature from the first week of kindergarten and his signature from his last week of kindergarten. It absolutely amazed me at how much his handwriting had changed and improved!

I love all my reminders and memories!

By the way…that wall hanging is gorgeous!!

  146. Darlene Luker Says:

don’t you just love letters? emails are wonderful too but nothing like opening the snail mail box and finding a card or a letter from a friend!

  147. Jennifer Stott Says:

I actually save many cards or letters that are meaningful and I have an email folder on the computer to save email that I want to keep. One thing that I have saved over the years since I was about 12 (20 years ago) are letters that my dad used to write to me when he was away working in a camp for 1 year. I really missed him but he sent me lots of letters and I still have them all. I read them about once a year when I am going through things.
Of course I also save many things that my kids have made as well.

  148. Eugenia McQueen Says:

I THOROUGHLY enjoy your books, Cindy. They are unusually good with great character development and story lines. I have an avid interest in the Amish and read everything I can about them, endeavoring to learn from their lives how to simplify my own!

  149. Cynthia Littlejohn Says:

Hi, my name is Cynthia and my best friend’s last name is Woodsmall, so your name is easy to remember. We have read all your books and look forward to more. We put them in the church library when we finish reading them so other’s can enjoy them too.

  150. Sylvia Miller Says:

    Hi Cindy,
I am a new fan and I am enjoying your books so much. I can’t wait for the next one to come out in September. I am a true believer in still sending out handwritten notes and letters. I love doing this and it is my special way to say “I love you” to my friends and family. Keep up the good stories. Some day I am going to Amish Country. I should have been born in that generation!

  151. Lisa Castillo Says:

I love reading your books about the Amish people. I love their ways and when I read the books about them, I sometimes feel like I know the characters in the book. I would like to some day go and tour an Amish farm and actually talk to real Amish people. They have an amazing culture. Thanks for writing about them.

  152. Cassie Raymond Says:

It’s always so relaxing to read your books and there’s a part of me that would love to live the Plain life. Their lives must be so much more spiritual than ours because they’re not bombarded with all the high tech things we are in our lives. I’ve recently tried downsizing some things in my life so I can simplify and have more time to ponder the things that truly matter in all our lives–no matter what our backgrounds are!

  153. Sandra Kaczanowcke Says:

    Dear Cindy,
Thank you for sharing your friends letter. You are so lucky to have Amish friends. I have been interested in them for over 20 years and have many collectibles and pictures, plus non-fiction books as well as soooo many fiction ones.
I have saved all of the cards we received for our wedding—-that was 36 years ago this September. It is so much fun to go over them and remember the people who nowadays we don’t even have contact with anymore or are no longer with us.
So, please enter me in you contest for the Amish wall hanging. It would be a wonderful addition to my collection.
I’m sure you don’t remember, because you meet so many people, but I met you at a book signing in Grand Rapids, MI last August. That was so much fun. I am looking forward to the new release, since I have read all of your other stories. Thanks for all the great stories and “Please” keep on writing.

  154. Debbie Nelson Says:

Please enter my name in the quilted wall hanging
    contest.
    Thanks!

  155. Mary Alice Yoder Says:

I am Amish and use the computer at my job. I agree wholeheartedly with what you said about the printed page. i still think you need y=to come to Topeka, Indiana for a book signing. I am good friends with Wanda Brunstetter and love to read and write. I am also an associate editor of a magazine called The Connection. If you give me an address I’ll send one to you. the magazine is about the Amish, has letters every month from the Amish. I don’t feel we are to be exalted at all, we are just people. I would love to meet you, cuz I LOVE your style of writing. I’d love to get a reply from you.

  156. lucy brooks Says:

I have loved your books from the very first one and look forward to the next one each time.I still have a lot of my letters that I have recieved over the years and it brings back so many memories of the simpler life, as you know I was raised in a faith almost like the Amish. Thnks for everything that you say and do and especially your writing. I love the wall hanging.

  157. Marsha Iske Says:

You have introduced me to the wonderful world of the Amish. Their Plain and simple way of life comes alive in your books and seems so appealing in this hectic world we now live in. September just can’t arrive soon enough, when your newest book will be available. Thanks for bringing me a good read and changing my outlook on life somewhat.

  158. Beth Hemmi Says:

Cindy, I was fortunate enough to be attracted to the cover of your second book at my local bookstore. I was doing some quick shopping on my way to a silent retreat. I had never been on one and anticipated having too much time on my hands. Needless to say I purchased your first book and have not stopped wanting more yet. I look forward to your next one. Your books give my heart a chance to breath in all that God has created in such a better way. Thanks. It will be great to win the wall hanging.

  159. Rebekah Says:

I too kept almost every b-day card I got for my b-day when I was a kid, letters from my pen pals and even Christmas Cards from friends. Years later, it means so much to go back and re-read all of them. Especially cards from my grandma, who is now dead, and read all the little notes she put in them.

  160. Phyllis Says:

I so enjoy your books and your column. I appreciate the respect you give to your Amish friends. Thank you, Cindy.

  161. linda Pugh Says:

My husand retired last year, making it possible for us both to make that ‘once in a lifetime’ trip to America. we spent five wonderful days in Lancaster County. Seeing this quilt reminds me of some of the lovely Amish folk we met, and of their kindness shown to us.
I always enjoy reading your books Cindy, and am grateful for this opportunity to say thank you. May our Lord continue to bless you in your writing.

I just finished the Sisters of the Quilt series and loved them all. Am looking forward to reading the rest of your books. In this fast paced world, delving into the lives of the Amish is so peaceful and relaxing. You do a splendid job of making one feel as though they are right there with your characters. I love books that make me want to just keep reading and reading and when the story ends I’m a little sad because I want more. Bless you and your family!

  163. Lesa Brassette Says:

I’d love to be entered in the contest! I must say I sit here a bit envious. I’m an avid old fashioned letter writer and would feel so ecstatic to have an Amish friend to correspond with. No, I’m just downright jealous. lol

  164. joycelyn block Says:

I just finished reading The Hope of Refuge and thoroughtly enjoyed reading it. Highly recommend this book! I can’t wait until bk 2 comes out in Sept.

  165. Paula Hard Says:

Thanks for all that you’ve written. I do look forward to each new release. I finish the books so fast though, so I get impatient waiting for the new ones. :) It is endearing to me to give and to receive hand-written letters as well. It seems there is something more lasting when you have a hard copy in your hand. Technology’s purpose, as I remember the definition, is to make our lives easier; but I believe that in some ways it does complicate our lives as well. In referring to the printing off of emails, I am guilty of just leaving them in my inbox as are many others, but what would happen if my computer crashes and I lose everything? More likely than not, I cannot retrieve them. It would be as tragic as losing hard copies, or photographs in a fire. Which reminds me, I should back up all of my photos soon. Thanks again!

  166. Jen Lamberjack Says:

Cindy: I’m sure I’m not going to be saying anything that anyone else hasn’t already said, but I would just like to say thank you for writing fiction that is pure and just a good story. Nowadays, you are in the minority of writers. I’m sure God smiles as he sees his daughter using her talent to bring joy to others and especially to let them know, or remind them, how much he loves them, too.

  167. Connie McCarthy Says:

    <3 I L <3 ve your books <3 !!
Can't wait to see quilt on my bed ;0)

  168. Nedra Wright Says:

Your books are a blessing. I have something Amish. It is a basket I bought when my husband and I were going through KY on a business trip. I would love to have an Amish quilted hanging.

  169. Robin Tull Says:

My cousin told me about your books and I have been hooked since then. I have always been fascinated with the Amish life because I believe that all the junk of this world does ruin the relationship with God. Every year I attend an Amish auction that is held and I see how happy the people are and if they aren’t you sure can’t tell it. Many thanks for the wonderful books.

  170. Grace Cokeley Says:

I became acquainted with the Amish population at a very young age while visiting my grandparents in Iowa City, Iowa. My grandparents were both osteopaths who treated several members of the Kolona community. I have always been fascinated with their lives, and have visited various Amish communities whenever the opportunity arose. Your books bring out their hearts. When I visited my grandmothers house, I used to play with some beautiful old fashioned post cards, which unfortunately were thrown away when they both passed away. I’m afraid I have a tendency to save more letters and cards than I should, but I feel that one day this will help those who come after me to understand who their relatives really were. Maybe they will see the hearts of those people, as well.

  171. Marsha Koch Says:

I love reading your stories and dream of the simple life. At least a more simple life. I love receiving letters and am often prompted by the Lord to write to someone. It is almost as good as a visit and lasts longer. THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR STORIES AND THOUGHTS WITH US

  174. Mary Brown Says:

Hello Cindy, I am writing this comment in hopes that you would truly understand how much I would love to win your quilt. I am from PA originally. Recently we almost lost our home but to my surprise my husband filed Chapter 13 so it would stop the sale of our home. We are trying to ensure we now have a home that we love and want to keep. I am trying to make changes in my bedroom and would love to show off the quilt if I won. It would be something that would make me feel closer to Pennsylvania. I live in Texas but miss PA so much sometimes. Anyway please if you would or could choose my blog to win the quilt. It would find the best home with me and would be treasured for the “treasure” it is. Thanks so much Mary Brown.

  175. deb altaffer Says:

I am a snail mailer. People have forgotten how comforting a LETTER can feel. To have the mental picture of their days actions or ideas placed in a random jumble only to have them bring it all together logically. I truly believe the writer of the LETTER somehow calms themselves just by writing a LETTER to a loved one. May it come back soon I truly miss it. Deb Altaffer

  176. Kathy McMeans Says:

    Dear Cindy,
I would love to win the wall hanging. I have a bedroom with a old time white cotton bedspread. I collect anything that has to do with the Amish. I have dolls, baskets, etc. Your books are the reason I started reading again. I loved to read in high school. I have been out of school for 30 years, so your books have brought the joy of reading back into my life. Thanks You are a Godsend. Kathy

  177. Lori O'Dell Says:

It is no wonder you are such a wonderful author. Even your story of sitting down to read your Amish friend’s letter makes everything seem peaceful. It made me realize that I do need to sit down and write a letter to a friend of mine that is miles away. I also appreciate the opportunity to win such a beautiful piece of work!

  178. Shirley B Says:

Love your books, and I sometimes wish we were in the simple (but not easy) life of the Amish. The have pride and care in their work.

  179. Jane Hanna Casale Says:

I love to receive letters. I would love to win the wallhanging, it would make a lovely birthday gift for my sister, Karla, who loves all things Amish. God bless! Denki! Jane

  180. Amy O'Dell Says:

Hi Cindy! I want to be entered in the Amish quilt contest. I just fisnished When the Heart Cries and I loved it. The best Christian author I have read in a long time. You know how to write descriptively and I appreciate that being an English major. I have all your books but the Christmas hardback and I plan on getting it. I started When the Morning Comes right after I finished #1 because I’m dying to know if Hannah talks to Paul again. Love the characters!Keep writing!!!!!!!!!!

  183. Joyce Arnold Says:

I have a couple of very special letters that were written to my Mother and myself from my Dad while he served in the Navy during WWII. They are the very small square ones, that were copies after being censored by the Government. Wouldn’t trade them for anything, have them in the Lock Box for future generations to see.

  184. Marie Ferland Says:

I have some very special letters from my husband when we were dating as well as letters from my mom after I had gotten married. I know how special handwritten letters are in this day and age, email is to “easy”. I sponsor a family in India, actually our 3rd family in 13 years, and send letters to them. It’s a dying art form really. I have loved all things Amish for a very long time and sometimes wonder why I wasn’t born in a simpler time and lifestyle. I would love to win an Amish quilt! Please enter me. Thanks

  185. Vivian Mink Says:

I purchased a small wall quilt made by an Amish girl and it was her very first quilt. I love it. It is hanging at my front door so everyone can enjoy when they come to visit. My husband and I have been to Bird in Hand, Intercourse and Lancaster several times. Just being aroung Amish people is a blessing and I wish the whole world could be as humble as they are. I do a little quilting myself but not near as detailed and straight stitched as the Amish do. I also love your books

  186. Priscilla Blake Says:

Love your books and cannot wait until Sept 7th. Have already requested that the library purchase this one! I have a penpal letter written to me in the 3rd grade. It was decorated with constuction paper and yarn. Lets just say my oldest grandchild is 21 so that is how long I have had it! I love the wall hanging especially since it is in red white and blue my favorite colors. We used to go to the Kutztown fair when I was little and I was facsinated with the quilts there. Blessings to you for your wonderful stories.

  187. Pat Wanner Says:

Oh Cindy how I love your books. Just started reading them this winter and have read everyone our library has. You see my husbands fathers side of the family comes from Honey Brook and as a boy my husband has spent many summers living among the amish. We still try to get back there when we can as we both just love it. Love to eat at Dienner”s Restaurant in Ronks. It is the best. Please keep those wonderful stories coming.

I am in the middle of a couple of different Amish series right now, but I can’t wait to buy your latest book, and look forward to September for the next one! I love reading stories about Amish and finding new recipes. I have an Amish quilt that I purchased while my family and I were on vacation in Lancaster. I would love to have many more.

  194. Shirley Reeves Says:

Please enter me in the contest. A few years ago my husband and I were at a quilt retreat at Bird in Hand, and also got to shop at Intercourse and surrounding quilt shops. Saw some beautiful hand-quilted quilts. I like to piece, but have never done any hand quilting.

I love reading your books – they have been a source of enjoyment and sometimes comfort to me over the years. A couple of years ago I lost my husband to cancer and reading is how I make it through the days. Thank you for the Christian style you write in and for giving me something to get through the days.

  199. Maggi Says:

    Hi Cindy,

I just finish reading the series Sisters of the Quilt . I am embarrassed to admit I never enjoy reading in fact I never read anything unless it was for school. Until, last November when I was in the store and a book caught my eye. It was tiled “The Silent Gift” which you help write. From the point I started look for other books you might have written and found the series about Hannah. I love each and every book from beginning to end. I think the series Sisters of the Quilt would make a good Tv mini series for people who have trouble reading or for people who can not read at all. I just thought that maybe people who could not another wise enjoy your work could through Tv. I will continue read your Novels.

    A True Fan,
    Maggi
