Congratulations, Marilyn!

Orignal post:

Last Tuesday, President Obama’s inauguration reminded me of something I bought from an Amish friend of mine—an Amish-made American flag wall hanging.

If you’d like a chance to win this, just leave a comment below.

Last week, our youngest son was in the throes of that American tradition called Inauguration Day. He left the Friday night before and came home Wednesday at six a.m. We heard from him every day. He called for less than a minute each time—usually to assure us he was safe and having fun. Our favorite call from him was on Sunday morning, before seven a.m., asking me where I packed his tie.

“Uh, right where I showed you it would be . . . four times.”

It wasn’t easy helping him find it via phone. The room he was in was noisy, and he was a bit uptight—both of which made hearing me difficult.

The tie was tucked safely inside a hidden pocket of his new suit. I knew when we were packing his suitcase that in his excitement he wasn’t paying attention, so I showed him several times, and then I had his dad show him, and then I handed my son the jacket and had him locate the tie before the suit was packed.

He finally discovered it. His dad and I couldn’t help but laugh. Good thing the young man is cute! ;-)

I wonder, does President Obama have this kind of issue with his daughters? I would hope so, since they are years younger than my son. But our son’s deal is probably a case of “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Our youngest son is about as scattered and distractible as I was at his age. I couldn’t find the pencil I’d had in my hand two seconds earlier, but I could read a novel and never miss the faintest inferred emotion. I fought to concentrate in a classroom, but a parade could be happening around me once a book was open in my hand, and I never heard anything but the silent words on the page. My mother went with the flow, always curious who I’d grow up to be.

Very cool!

It’s time for me to get the next school subject taught and edit marketing blurbs my publisher sent last night, so I’ll leave you with a gentle reminder.

Please remember to pray for our president, for our leaders, and for our children. A favorite Scripture of mine is Psalm 127:1. “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain who build it. Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman wakes in vain.”

On our own, we can do nothing that will grow the fruit we desire, but if we unite our efforts with faith in Him, He will build a house and keep watch over the city.

Em Gott sei Friede (God’s peace),

Cindy

  4. Renee L. Grandon Says:

    Dear Cindy,

This is the first time I have ever read Christian books. I have read your first novel and can not wait to start the second one. I purchased both of them at a church bazaar this past Fall. I hope to get the third one soon.

I have known the Amish all my life as my grandfather used to have them do harness work for him. As I am a crafter myself, I take great pleasure in owning and showing off any unique and different forms of Amish handiwork. This piece would be very special to me as I can see this as something that my grandfather would/could have created himself possibly.

I love this piece as it brings back lots of childhood memories and I cherish the Spirit of America in decorating with the red, white and blue everyday.

    God’s peace,

    Renee L. Grandon

    Hey Cindy,
I live in Noble Village, a retirement village in Suwanee,Ga. near my son. We moved here because my sweet husband has Alz. We are from Chattanooga,Tn.
The bus takes to the library often and I get lots of their Inspirational fiction–I saw your book–”When the heart Cries” looked it over, took it home and was totally hooked. I was especially overjoyed because I had discovered someone like Beverly Lewis, and L. Snelling. This book is a keeper. I am going to the bookstore to get your others…It has all of the qualities and vicarious essentials to transport me to the scene…Thank you so very much!!!I can’t believe I can actually tell you this even without the bonus of a chance on the unique quilt flag!!! My daughter in law who is awesome in our relationship, has done her kitchen in flags, stars–even her dishes!!!She would flip out over the flag…Oh, I am 83, teach art here, manage the library as a former librarian, and try to help folks who have problems,,,it continues to be a blessing—I always have time to read…
Still in awe over this site!!!
Be safe, and do keep writing!
    Olwyn

  17. Cindy Woodsmall Says:

    Hi, Olwyn!

I’m so glad you found my book at the library! Welcome to Georgia.

  18. Debbie Says:

Cindy: My Mom is 80 and now resides in an assisted living facility in Texas. She has made quilts all of my life. Age and health issues now prevent her from quilting. She always dreamed of being able to come visit an Amish town,I do not believe she will be able to fulfill that dream as travel is quite cumbersome for her now. I purchased all three of your books for my Mom as she loves Christian books and loves to read about Amish characters. She read them in record time. I am anxiously awaiting your next two books to be released this fall to purchase for her enjoyment. Thank you for sharing your talent of writing with us. Thank you for your genuine feelings of honor, respect and concern for our nation.

  19. sam Says:

    Hi Cindy,

Since I was just-married 19, I have been fascinated and quite frankly drawn to “the simple life”. At 25 with two beautiful boys that feeling has never stopped. It is wonderful reading your books. I feel it shows that Amish and everyone has battles to face. Love your work!

  20. Lyn Franklin Says:

Just discovered your site and your books. They sound amazing and I can’t wait to get my hands on them!
Please enter my name in the contest.

  21. April Dowdle Says:

You did it again Cindy!! You blow all other Amish writers out of the water! I can’t say enough wonderful things about your latest book. The difference in your books and other Amish writers is night and day. Most other Amish books I’ve read are so predictable of what’s going to happen. I was telling a friend that I’ve shared your books with, that I just couldn’t guess the ending of your last novel. It was definitely keeping me edge the whole time. I can’t wait to read more from you in the future. By the way, I shared my bookmarks you sent with our church library. Thank you so much caring about your fans and for writing such soulmending novels.

  22. Sarah Bailey Says:

I enjoyed reading the series, thankfully my local library has your books or otherwise I wouldn’t be able to read them. Right now we have three little ones ages 7 and under and I stay home so we can homeschool. finances are tight but it’s a blessing to be able to stay home with these blessings. Keep up the great writing.

    Sarah Bailey

  23. Betty Jo Huff Says:

Cindy, It is so awesome to see that someone is so blessed with the quilt. I love the flag it reminds me of my son whom just got back from being in the service the flag is more meaningful everyday as I see one anywhere as he lost two special people in Iraq and so as I see this it reminds me of thise who have served for our freedom. I can’t wait to see your new books!!!!!

  24. Jane Squires Says:

I really love the quilts I see you get from Amish. My Grandmother used to sew quilts. She made one for each of us grandkids and mine has worn out. I made my oldest daughter a memory quilt with all her t-shirts from school from choir, softball, clubs, etc. and she wanted hers left whole and sewed into a quilt. She said it is the warmest quilt she has. I actually sewed it to a quilt we had used for years ourselves on our bed. Her and her spouse enjoy it a lot living in Indiana where it gets so cold.
Then my youngest daughter wanted a memory quilt too. She had me cut the pictures off her t-shirts into squares and helped me sew it. It is on her and her spouse’s bed all the time too. They will always have memories of their growing up.
I would love to win the flag because it would be a special Christmas gift for someone.
I just loaned your book when The Soul Mends to my church secretary who will then pass it to another lady. I have 5 women waiting to see what happens as I loaned them the two previous books. We share books all around the church. In fact I now share with my Arthritis Specialist, My Physician Assistant and her whole office. It has been a blessing.

  25. Jean Miller Says:

I’m in the middle of the third book of the Sisters of the Quilt series. I would much rather be home reading right now, than at work!

I will be donating the books to my church library when I’m finished reading them.

  26. Debra Baumgartner Says:

My home is all done in Americana as I love this land and all those who have and continue to fight for our safety and freedome! God Bless you all! And I love your books Cindy! Am anxiously awaiting the next release! Debra

  27. Nancy Six Says:

  28. Patti Says:

are so lucky to have so many Amish in your live.
