The Shape of Mercy and New Contest

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008 11:30 pm

Remember the Salem Witch trials? It’s a time period cloaked in mysteries and Susan Meissner has written a powerful book that delves deep into love, fear, and how prejudice and judgment affects three separate generations of women—a young Puritan girl, an elderly librarian, and a college student.

Here’s what a reviewer from Publishers Weekly wrote:

Meissner’s newest novel is potentially life-changing, the kind of inspirational fiction that prompts readers to call up old friends, lost loves or fallen-away family members to tell them that all is forgiven and that life is too short for holding grudges. Achingly romantic, the novel features the legacy of Mercy Hayworth-a young woman convicted during the Salem witch trials-whose words reach out from the past to forever transform the lives of two present-day women. These book lovers-Abigail Boyles, elderly, bitter and frail, and Lauren Lars Durough, wealthy, earnest and young-become unlikely friends, drawn together over the untimely death of Mercy, whose precious diary is all that remains of her too short life. And what a diary! Mercy’s words not only beguile but help Abigail and Lars together face life’s hardest struggles about where true meaning is found, which dreams are worth chasing and which only lead to emptiness, and why faith and hope are essential on life’s difficult path. Meissner’s prose is exquisite and she is a stunning storyteller. This is a novel to be shared with friends. (Sept. 16)

A few weeks back, I e-mailed Susan, asking her to share a bit about why she’d written the book—what event in her life planted seeds for this book. Susan wrote back, saying ~

When I was 13, I played the role of an innocent woman accused of witchcraft in the play To Burn a Witch. To save herself, my character at the eleventh hour began to accuse another young woman in her prison cell – a friend from her village – of bewitching her. The play ends with my character being freed and the likewise innocent friend – who would not lie to save herself – being led away to her execution.

I’ve never forgotten how it felt to imagine myself accused falsely, nor what it felt like to accuse falsely. The latter has actually been more haunting. To point a finger at someone and make a declaration about him or her based on nothing more than fear is to make friends with love’s enemy. I had read The Crucible years ago in high school, but I didn’t really make the connection between what happened in Salem in 1692 with what continues to happen with sad regularity all the time: We often judge what we don’t understand, when we are afraid or when we become indifferent to our ignorance. But the truly amazing thing is, while the Salem witch trials arguably revealed the worst in us, it also laid bare the bit of divine in us that shines even in the darkest place. When faced with death, there is still courage enough within us to stand for what is right. Those who lost their lives so long ago in Salem refused to confess they had an allegiance with Satan. In writing The Shape of Mercy, I found that kind of fidelity to God remarkable – and this is what I now think of when I think of Salem, not a hangman’s rope but utter devotion to Truth.

Susan’s book and mine were released on the same day by our amazing publisher WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group, and I’d like to run a contest that offers a chance for five people to win both books. So, the contest this time includes a chance to win The Shape of Mercy and When the Soul Mends. There will be five winners chosen, each will win an autographed copy of both books. All you need to do is leave a comment. Anyone who joined the last contest after a winner was chosen will have their comment moved to this contest section.

Next blog post: Finding Hannah

My next post will include an article about my search to find Hannah for book two in Sisters of the Quilt series. As book one closed, she was seventeen years old with an eighth-grade education and nothing but a few clothes, a medical book, and a lifetime of broken dreams and betrayal. But imagination alone couldn’t find her, so I went in search of her secret.

If you posted to the last blog entry after a winner was chosen, your comment will be moved to this post and you’ll be entered into this contest.

Please enter me!! I love this series. I was half way through the first book before I realized it. Cindy hooks you in right from the start and you can’t put the book down. I love reading books that are in a series about women of the pioneer days or the Amish. I grew up on a farm in the Midwest and these books take me back to the “good-ole-days”. Life was hard and times were tough but you knew what the commitment of family was.

  10. Crystal Says:

My aunts friend let me borrow the first two books. I couldn’t put them down and when I was done with them I passed them on to my mom, my sister then my co-worker. Everyone loved them and we couldn’t wait for September to read the 3rd book. I bought it on a Friday night, started reading it on Saturday morning and finished it by Sunday evening. It was fantastic. I would love to have the set since I borrowed the first two and had to give them back.

  16. Brenda Blanchard Says:

How refreshing to read your books about the Amish. I grew up in New Jersey and would visit Lancaster County now and then. I live in Texas now and miss this so much. Reading your books brings back so many memories. I can envision exactly how they live and their ways. It is so refreshing. With the world as it is today how wonderful it would be to get back to the ways the Amish live. I admire their courage and how they strive to keep their culture in today’s society.
I would luv to win your books I enjoy them immensely. Thank you for writing them. I hope to see more. I do not have When the Soul Mends.

  17. Jody Clipp Says:

My mom loaned me your 1st book and I was hooked. I was able to borrow the 2nd one from my library. I was so anxious for the 3rd book to come out. I put my name on a list at my library. 20. donna ramirez Says:

I just finished reading your third book. It was amazing. I laughed I cried and I was hoping for a happy ending, which was exactly how I wanted the story to end. The characters really stick deep in my mind, and sometimes I wish we really had more generous and loyal men in this world like Paul Waddell LOL. (Did you really meet people like that among the Amish?)

  21. Mandy Bentley Says:

I would probably do a little (or a big) dance if I won your books! I borrowed the first two from a woman at church, but I wish I would have bought them. My dad always says that if you’re buying a book it is not a waste of money. I agree. Anyway, I would love to be entered in the contest and I would be honored if I actual won!

    Loving your books in KY!

    Blessings,
    Mandy

  22. Arlene Says:

I am an avid book reader. Okay, way past avid. My husband thinks I am a book-a-holic. In a good way. So with all of this book reading (all christian fiction) I have become quite the critic. I was skeptical when I got your books from the library, but WoW! I couldn’t put it down. I know a book is good when I finish it in 1 and 1/2 days. Then I finished the second book in the same time and went and scoured the countryside looking for the third. Unfortunately I won’t have it until after October 3rd! What will I do until then???? Thanks for writing a great series.

  23. Kayren Says:

I love to read and would love to win. Thanks!

  24. Kristie Says:

Finally the third book in the series. My library patrons and I have been anxiously awaiting this book. We have multiple copies, but it is never enough. Can’t wait!!! Of course, I would love to win my OWN copy! I don’t buy many books since I’m a librarian. Mostly at book sales… or cookbooks!
    Thanks!

  25. Jenn Says:

I am amazed!! A friend from work recommended your books to me, and I come to your website and there is a contest to win your books…How AMAZING would that be!!! I would definitely lend them to my friends as well…PLEASE consider me for your autographed copies of this series!!

  26. Denise Patch Says:

My experience reading your first two books was very much like being in a dream. I floated through the pages somewhere beyond this waking reality, taking it all in through all my senses. I can’t wait to go back there for book three!

  27. Laura Cloud Says:

I just finished When the Soul Mends. The series was excellent. I have to admit that I did what I usually do and read the last chapter before I finished the book because I couldn’t wait to see if Hannah wound up with Paul or with Martin.

  28. Goldie Parsons Says:

I have now read all three of the book in The Sisters of The Quilt Series and was very well pleased with all three. The ending was amazing. I was so happy it ended that way [plot spoiler removed ;-) ]. Thanks for writing these books. I love reading about the Amish and am looking forward to reading more of your books as you write them. Keep up the good work and I am patiently waiting for more books to be written.

Once again thanks for excellent reading material. I Love it.

  29. Lori McCleskey Says:

The day the 3rd book came out – I had it in my hands by 3pm that afternoon. It was FABULOUS!!! All my friends are lined up to read this series because I’ve talked about it so much! You should have seen them scramble for the book the minute I got done with it! LOL Can’t wait for the next series to come out! Awesome!

  30. Katia Says:

Thank you for such an awesome book series!

  31. Vi McDonald Says:

I feel so blessed to have books like yours to read. I was brought up in southern Manitoba, Canada in a large Mennonite family and so many things in your book bring back so many fond memories. I have just finished reading When Morning Comes and can hardly wait to go to the store and buy ‘When the Soul Mends’…thank you so much for your hard work on our behalf.

  32. JoAnna Schrock Says:

I absolutely LOVE your books. My parents were Amish, but I grew up Mennonite, and I can tell by the way you write that you know a lot about Amish life. Other novels I have read about the Amish turned me off as I didn’t feel they were true to the way the Amish actually live. Your books are marvelous in that they are true to life and remind me of the wonderful heritage and background I have. I also love the strong Christian values that come through. I can’t wait to read your 3rd book. Please enter me into the drawing. Thank you and God Bless you abundantly. JoAnna

  33. Joycelyn Says:

I have just finished reading When the Soul Mends. It is the most enjoyable book I have ever read. Once again you have done such a fantastic job! I just love Hannah and Paul and the way you make forgiving others a way of life to be learned. Your faith shines in these three books!!! You have truly been blessed with such an incredible gift from the Lord. I thank you for sharing such an amazing talent to all of us who reads your books. They are simply the best!!!! May God continue to Bless you. Joycelyn

  36. Michelle Hord Says:

After I moved from MI to FL 8yrs. ago, I began to tutor students in literacy and English as a Second Language. I was tutoring a young woman from Senegal, Africa. She could not speak any English when she arrived in the US. I had always been fascinated by the Amish community. Fanta had the same fascination. One of the first English books she read was When the Heart Cries. She moved to Canada and I sent her your second novel, after I read it ,of course. I visited her in July when she had her second child. I told her there was a third story to be published soon! We are both very excited waiting for the book to be released! Fanta treasures all of her English novels and textbooks. I would love to win the books and gift them to her.
Thank you for some wonderful stories. I will be introducing my two Japanese students to When the Heart Cries in October.

    Michelle

  37. Susan Says:

  38. Victoria Says:

Just finished “When The Soul Mends.” Picked it up on the 17th of September and finished reading it on the 19th. I loved the series. I couldn’t put it down. Plus I have a line of friends that are waiting for me pass it on.
Love the way you write. So much emotion in your words that I was suffering with Hannah. Also I live in the country and around Amish so I enjoyed your description of the country side and the Amish people.
    Keep on writing.

  39. Lynn Says:

My friend gave me the first two books to read. and I started reading When The Heart Cries and finished it in 1.5 days. You most certainly have me hooked on your books. I am reading When the morning comes now and am almost through with it.
She did not have the 3rd book yet, but I will be going to get it for her because I will not be able to go long with out reading the last of this series.
You are definitely on my top list of Authors now
I will be keeping a watch out for your books.
I almost hate to have to give them back to her, but I will
    Blessings
    Lynn

    Melinda Cabrera

  46. Lynn Coursey Says:

Hello! A while back I was browsing in my local book store, looking for an interesting read, something different than my usual romance novels. I decided to browse the “Christian / Inspirational” section, and I’m so very glad I did, because it was there I found Cindy Woodsmall’s first two books of the “Sisters Of The Quilt” series. I read the first book, “When the Heart Cries” in two days, a record for me with my busy schedule! By the time I finished reading book two, “When the Morning Comes”, Hannah literally had a place in my heart. I am about halfway through the third book, When the Soul Mends”, and hope so much the story will not stop here! Please, please Cindy Woodsmall, continue on!!

  47. Sandy H. Says:

I first discovered your books when I was on a trip with friends to Walnut Creek in Ohio. Since then I have researched the area and my husband and I are considering moving there from a much too busy area in New Jersey.

  48. Jen Says:

I simply cannot wait for the third book in this series!! Please don’t keep us in suspense any longer than you have to!! :-)

  49. Sheri Says:

Ever since vacationing at Willow Valley in the Pennsylvania Dutch area many, many years ago I have been fascinated with the Amish. As an avid reader over the years I have devoured anything written about them. I only recently discovered your books and can’t get enough. My husband and children are sure that one day I will leave them for the “plain life” or at least one day they may come home and find I have removed the electricity from the house and gotten rid of all the television sets!!!!! I am sure that I must be “part Amish” somewhere inside as I have always had a tendency towards hanging clothes on the a clothes line, candle light, gardening and cooking lots of home made goodies!!! I think the only thing holding me back is that I am not a hat person so I’m not too sure about wearing a “kapp”!!!! I would love to win a set of your books. I pray the storeis keep coming!! Thank you.

  50. AmberRae Miller Says:

I have also like several read your books I just got finished with the third book in sisters of the quilt my inlaws are waiting they are an amish family and some of the girls just love the storys like this weve also read beverly Lewis and wanda brunstetter. 51. Mary Says:

I was raised on a farm in Gillett,Pa. As a young child I saw horse drawn buggies with very “plain” looking people, not often but enough to wonder who they were and why did they dress that way! As I grew older I learned of who they were. AMAZING!!We moved to Texas when I was 15 and when I visit family up north, I always make sure we would go by the Amish and Mennonite farms. I didn’t know why until I found books written about the “plain life”. I think it would be interesting and very rewarding to live as they do. I was never much on reading until I found something worth reading!! Having a signed set of “your” books would be awesome!! Thank you for a great read and I can’t wait for future books! You can be sure they will be in my collection!! God Bless!!

I am anxiously waiting to read your new book as soon as it is returned to our library but I’m thinking maybe I should re-read the first 2 first as I enjoyed them so much..I love reading about the Amish and their way of life. Just wondering if you keep in contact with Luann, your friend from the teenage years? I will also look forward to reading Susan Meissner’s book..thanks

I am a little over half way through “When the Heart Cries.” I bought it when it first came out and now I am sad I did not pick it up earlier to read. I am an avid reader and will buy dozens of books at a time and work my way through them.
Anyway, I love the story so much, I just ordered the 2nd and 3rd online. They will be read next! Fall 2009 is a very long time to wait for the next one!
Thanks for sharing your gift of writing through these books.
Please enter me in your contest.
