Storytellers’ Journal & a new contest
The Hames Contest was fantastic! Nancy Lou of Raleigh, North Carolina received her Amish-made hames in the mail today. A huge thanks to every one of you who participated! I was thrilled with the response!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have an article coming out in the 2008 Storytellers’ Journal that tells about how I connected with the Amish.
I’ve shared a little of it here, but the full article will be available in May at your local Christian bookstore. Just ask the store manager for your complimentary copy of Storytellers’ Journal. If they dont’ have it, ask the manager order copies from their WaterBrook/Multnomah sales representative.
Connecting to the Old Order Amish Community
The garden needed more weeding, but the sun was sliding below the horizon, taking with it my ability to distinguish between weeds and produce. Laundry on the clothesline flapped in the summer breeze, reminding me and my Amish friend, Anna,[1] that we’d moved too slowly through the chores as I spent the day learning to handle the responsibilities of an Amish woman.
While I helped Anna take the clothes off the line, I reflected on how we met. Five years ago, I’d had a story in my heart that I wanted to write, but I needed an inside view. I wondered whether I could interview someone who was living an Old Order Amish life.
While growing up in Maryland, I’d had an Amish friend. Our adventures generated a desire in me to write about the joys and difficulties of relationships between the Plain folk and outsiders. The angst and disapproval of our parents concerning our friendship led to the story idea about Hannah and Paul. Decades later, when I actually started writing a novel about an Amish family, my friend and I lived a thousand miles apart and I’d lost contact with her.
[1] Names have been changed to assure privacy
That’s the intro to the article and I hate to stop there, but I have to. The full article will be available in May at your local Christian bookstore. Just ask the store manager for your complimentary copy of Storytellers’ Journal. If they don’t have it, ask the manager to order copies from their WaterBrook/Multnomah sales representative. Writing the article was a very enjoyable project I’d love to share with you. The final product is free, so don’t be shy about requesting a copy from your local Christian bookstore.
The new contest has two items ~
The Amish-made craft seen above is one of the items. It is a
wooden washboard with a log cabin quilt patch.
And an autographed copy of When the Morning Comes is the second item.
The craft items I give away are made by Amish friends and I treasure them, but my hand-made items I want to share about today are created by my sister. She’s quite an artist and she’s made cherished works for as far back as I can remember. She doesn’t create the items as a profession; they are gifts. Her gifts range from cross stitch family trees, to hand-painted Christmas ornaments, to watercolor & caligraphy gift cards, to portraits of family members, and beyond. A part of her is in each item and it still surprises me how that makes each object carry a piece of who we’ve always been ~ the love, the fun, the struggles, the parts of life no one else is privvy to.
For a chance to win both of these items, all you need to do is enter a comment.
Do you have a hand-made item in your home that is special to you? Something maybe you or your sister, mom, dad, brother, or child made. If you’d like to share about that, we would all enjoy reading about it. If you’re more comfortable leaving a comment that simply says enter me, that works just fine too;-)
You don’t need to leave any personal info where readers can see it. You can enter your first name only and then log your e-mail address into the correct field when leaving a comment. I’ll be the only one able to read your e-mail address.
The contest is for residents of the continental United States and it will continue until June 1st.
God’s peace ~
Cindy
Your Books are wonderful. And I can’t wait for the third one. Even my co-workers whom I’ve shared the book, can’t wait. My mom too. I have a lot of people that are waiting for the 3rd book. I hope you keep writing, and introduce a new series after the 3rd book. PLEASE
April 8th, 2008 at 12:44 am
Hello Cindy,
I happened upon your books by accident. While walking through Barnes and Nobles I was struck by the image of a young Amish women staring at me from a side table, and though I was there for another errand, I could not help but sit down and devour your book in its entirety. After that I sought out the next one and I am anxiously awaiting the third. I found your story very compelling, in large part because everything does not come neatly together. There are frayed ends and incompleteness that feels more genuine and natural then the forced endings more common place in fiction … especially romantic fiction. Your story was a breath of fresh air. Danke.
April 8th, 2008 at 4:17 am
Mrs Woodsmall,you are a fabulous writer.I just finished the second vol. and simply cannot wait for the third.I will now read anything with your name on it…even a menu.
April 8th, 2008 at 10:30 am
I LOVE the Sisters of the Quilt series. I live in northern Maryland and Amish country is all around us. They are very sweet and somewhat misunderstood people. We could learn a lot from them if we tried. I happened upon your books by mistake. I had just finished one series of books by another author and wanted to read something else. I found the first book in the Sisters of the Quilt series, bought it and couldn’t put it down. I made my husband stop the next day and buy the secone one. Now I cannot wait for the third and final installment to come out. Thank you for the wonderful books that you write.
April 8th, 2008 at 11:52 am
I am absolutely in awe of the Amish way of life. I found your books, and in less than 2 days, have finished these 2 and you’ve left me wanting more!
Can’t wait for the 3rd book!
Things were just different years ago, before even the “quick fix” dinners. I miss knowing that at the end of the day is a delicious HOME COOKED meal, not one popped in the microwave and cooking while emails are checked and sent.
Hello,
I am not good at this online stuff but wanted you to know how much I enjoyed your books. I have read all of Beverly Lewis books and enjoyed them so much that I was in search of other authors about the Amish. I came across your two books and read them in a few days. The problem I have now is……..how can I wait until Sept to read the last one? LOL I don’t know why I am so attracted to books about the Amish. We have recently bought a home in LaBelle Missouri where I see many Amish and Mennonites in the area. I would love to just go to them and talk with them. Of course, I would never do that but I feel as if I know them through your books. Thank you for writing such enjoyable books that I can not only read myself but pass them on to my two teen daughters to read. It is something that we can share. I am a mother of four. My children go to Catholic schools (except for the year I home schooled them)and I am very much involved in their lives. It is nice to share a book and not have to worry about its content. I keep busy with them and so like the time when I can sit back and read your books. They take me away from all my worries and tensions of my life. I hope you write many more! Please let me know of any contests, for I would like to enter. After reading your two books last week I had to look you up online to see when the last one would be out.
Sincerely Yours,
Mary Beth
Dear Cindy,
I had been reading stories about the Amish with another author. When I picked up your book and realized I had your Series Sisters of the Quilt Book two. I had to find Book one so I was on the hunt. Finally I ordered it from Barnes and Noble.
I loved your two books, When the Heart Cries and When the Morning Comes. Your stories are so interesting I couldn’t put the books down. I read and read through the night. Wow, I thought I have to slow down there may not be any more to chose from and then I opened up your web site and was tickled to learn of a new one coming out. I am thrilled. I grew up in Amish country so I can relate to your stories. My best friend in school was an Amish girl and I was so broken hearted when she finished eighth grade and couldn’t come to school anymore. I don’t know where she is today but I do think of her often. Reading about their ways brought a lot to my not knowing exactly why things were the way they were. When I was a young girl we had an Amish boy help on my grandfather’s farm. He had his buggy and horse tied to a pole and I use to take my dolls and get in the buggy and he let me ride in it. The horse did a circle around our farm little dirt road and that horse followed that road for hours while I played Amish. I thought I was really something playing Amish. My husband would tell everyone, when they ask “Where did you meet?” and he would say I brought her from the Amish community. I love your books and will continue to read every one you write. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Sears
I finished the second book in the Quilt Series and you have left your readers on the edge of our seats. What happens when Hannah goes back to Amish County? I can hardly wait and look eagerly forward to the next book. I’ll just have to “hurry up and wait”.
April 8th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
I just finished “when the heart cries”. I cried for the first time ever in a book. I stayed up way to late reading now it is 6:00 a.m. and I am on the computer trying to figure out if there is a sequel to this book. So happy to find out there is another one. Going to the bookstore today to buy it. My life has changed so much since I was a child. I lived with a Dad who was a religious fanatic and he moved us to a secluded mountain site in California where we had no running water or electricity. Have a great story about the first time we got electricity. I tell it to my kids at Christmas. Please keep writing you are so gifted. Good Luck
As the many people before me have stated, your books are wonderful! The Amish have always fascinated me. I noticed your books because of the covers … they simply drew me to them. After finishing with the 2nd book, I was so disappointed to find out the 3rd one was not out yet. However, after finding this website, I am thrilled to know that I have a great book to look forward to in September.
Thank you for sharing your gift with the world!
I love to read and your books are absolutely wonderful. I don’t think I can wait till Sept. to see how things work out with Hannah. My husband and I love to spend time in amish country. Both Holmes county and the Lancaster area. No one can cook as good as the amish do. It’s a good thing I don’t live in that area. It wouldn’t be good for my waistline. LOL Keep up the great writing.
THE NEW BOOK WILL COME OUT ON MY BIRTHDAY SEPT. 16 , I JUST LOVE TO READ YOUR BOOKS
April 8th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
My mother had your books in her pile that she had already read. I was getting ready to go on vacation when I chose “When the Heart Cries” and “When Morning Comes” to take with me. I could not put these books down until I finished it. As my mother told me when I picked them up..”they are a dinner burner” which in other terms you can’t put them down long enough to tend to what your cooking. I live around an amish community and reading your books have opened my eyes to their customs and beliefs. Thank you for such wonderful books and I look forward to find out how Hannah handles going back to Owl’s Perch in your next installment.
April 9th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
My sister introduced me to Amish books two years ago with Beverly Lewis. I was complete engrosed in the writings and after finishing all of her books; I just needed more. I visited the area book store and had them look up Amish Authors and discovered your books. What a wonderful story! I wait with anticipation for the 3rd book this fall. I may have to reread the first two just to get me through until September. Do you have any books before these two about the Amish?
April 10th, 2008 at 11:42 am
I like to make gifts for family also. Right now, I am working on cross-stitch Christmas tree skirts for each of my children’s familier. There are four, so it will take awhile. I have one completed and another about half way finished. Other crafts come in between stitch time quite often. There are 10 grandchildren who want things made by grandma.
April 10th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
I have read both When the Heart Cries and When the Morning Comes. I loved both books and felt like I was really there with Hannah and everyone and in their enviroment. I truly loved the stories and am waiting to find out more.
I have shared your books with my friends in my quilting group.
Thank You,
Jackie
I love to cross-stitch, especially making them look old by tea or coffee staining them, and even going as far as putting holes in them (hard to bring myself to do this after all the hours put into a cross-stitch) Right now though, I’m on a reading kick, and have just finished When the Morning Comes. I too can’t wait for number three..come on Sept…
I’m from spain, been in this country for 13 years. I work in a nursing home and, by accident I found “When The Heart Cries” on top of the nigth stand table of one of the residents. Don’t know why but, I have to ask this resident about this so special looking book.
Get to find out the book was from one of the activities department aids…, any ways… I read it…. the best book I ever read and my very first Amish one.
End it up reading “When The Morning Comes” …. that was also wonderfull.
Now…. cant wait ’till september.
Love your books…keep it up!
I have just finished both of the ‘Sisters of the Quilt’ books, and truly enjoyed them. Since the third book doesn’t come out until September, I can only dream and wonder what happens to Hannah and her families, both Amish & Englisher! It was a wonderful read, and, I have passed it on to a friend to read also. I hope you have another series already started on your computer, we can’t forget your wonderful characters and community you have built for us!
Blessings, Carolyn
I am so excited about this series,that I am telling everyone I know about your wonderful stories and the contest, they are so beautifully written and Holy Spirit inspired.I know that the Lord has His hand on you Cindy, and He is and will continue to use this avenue as an instrument of healing and restoration for all His daughters who have experienced pain in this life. It definately has captured my heart as I have caught myself asking the Lord many times,”how are you going to have Cindy conclude this series, Lord?” I can hardly wait to settle down this fall and see where the Spirit has lead you.
September??? Oh, the waiting will be long until the third book comes out! I read the first two books in your “Sisters Of The Quilt” and loved them. You are an outstanding author. I couldn’t put them down. I love the Amish people and their quiet, honorable lives and especially the character, Hannah. I feel I grow as a person when I read about them. Thank you for writing beautiful but realistic stories and for honoring the name of God unlike many popular authors today. I refuse to read books that take the Lord’s name in vain and I so thank you for using your God-given talent for His glory. Keep them coming, please. Blessings… Bonnie
Hi Cindy,
I am writing to answer your question about a special homemade item in my home. I have many treasured items including homemade crafts and antiques. The one homemade item that comes to mind the most is a handmade quilt my great-grandmother made for me as a small child. It is now worn and torn in places, but it now hangs on my quilt rack, bringing back fond memories of a person whom I loved dearly.
I wrote some comments to you in another part of your website yesterday as a new reader of your books. I just discovered them last week while shopping at Barnes & Noble for books on the Amish. I have always enjoyed reading and learning about the Amish culture. I have visited Lancaster County and Holmes County and hope to return soon. I absolutely loved these 2 books and found the character of Hannah Lapp utterly amazing. I am eager to read the 3rd book in the series to find out how her story concludes. I am now spreading the word among my family and friends about your books and even bought several copies to give as gifts. I know they will be just as captivated as I was.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful and creative talent with us, your readers. Sincerely,
Christine
I have always been a fan of fictional amish books and was very happy to come across your “Sisters of the Quilt” series. My mom and me were looking for something to read when we saw your book on the shelf. My mother is very skeptical about fictional amish authors. She likes your books because you are true to the amish beliefs. The only problem I have is that you really left us hanging with the second book. I can not wait until September to read the next book. Thanks for sharing with the world.
April 15th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Ms Woodsmall,
My favorite books to read are about the Amish & the Mennonites. I have read the first 2 books in the Sisters of the Quilt Series & I’m looking forward to the final book in September 2008. Your stories are very interesting & inspiring. Keep those stories coming, your writing is great.
Blessings,
She wants to read the other two but I just seen where the next one is available until Sept. I have read alot of Wanda Brustetter’s books and I really enjoyed so I know I will enjoy these as well. I want to say thank you for allowing others to read about the Amish so we can get a little insight of their lifes. It is such an enjoyment to read.
Greetings! I had an Aunt that I was extremely close to. Every Easter, she brought me a beautiful home made lamb cake. It would be covered in coconut and had jelly bean eyes and a licorice mouth and nose!
All around it on the plate, Easter grass was placed and sprinkled with Easter candy. When she passed away, I actually the lamb mold that she made my cake in. I also got a paint stained quilt of hers! My mother-in-law salvaged what she could of the quilt and made me an adorable stuffed bear from it. The lamb mold and the bear are dear to my heart. Thanks for letting me share. Cindi
My favorite handmade item in my house is the “chains of love” quilt that my grandmother made and gave to me on my wedding day. She had been having health problems, but she still managed to hand sew and quilt it just for me.
Hi Cindy -
I love your books and can’t wait for the next one. I have many hand-made items from both my mother and grandmother that I cherish. I don’t think I could pick a favorite - they all mean so much to me!
MS. CINDY JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW WHAT A BLESSING YOUR BOOKS ARE TO ME. I ABSOLUTLEY LOVE BOOKS THAT ARE IN A SERIES. I CAN HARDLY WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE. I ALSO HAVE SEVERAL ITEMS THAT MEAN A LOT TO ME BUT ONE IS A PINK PAIR OF CROCHETED BABY BOOTIES. AFTER 8 YEARS OF INFERTILITY, I WAS QUITE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT I WAS PREGNANT. NOT THAT I WAS LACKING FOR CHILDREN AS I HAD ALREADY ADOPTED 5. LOL. WELL MY MOM MAILED THE BOOTIES TO ME THE DAY THE TEST SAID POSITIVE. MY GRANDMOTHER HAD BEEN WORKING ON THEM WHEN SHE PASSED IN 2003. MY MOTHER FOUND THEM IN HER SEWING BASKET AND FINISHED THEM IN HOPES OF A GRANDAUGHTER GETTING TO WEAR THEM. MY BABY GIRL WAS BORN ON NOVEMBER 2ND, 2006. A TRUE MIRACLE. TO GOD BE THE GLORY. WE ARE BLESSED.
I love your writing Cindy! When I started reading ‘When a Heart Cries’, I couldn’t put it down, and I fell in love with the book from the start of the first page.
The second book was just as exciting and intense as the first. I can’t wait for the third book to come out. I know that I will get it on the first day, and I have it done in a week!
Thank you so much for writing these books. They have opened up my eyes to the amish, and I love reading about the amish culture!
April 24th, 2008 at 11:47 am
cindy, i love both of your books. I couldn’t put them down. I can’t wait for book three.
You have a great talent. I hope that after book three you will continue to write more stories about the amish.
I’m already on the waiting list for book three.
God Bless.
A friend told me she just read this great book and shared it with me. Soon it went to others at church and now after the second we can hardly wait until September for the conclusion.
You are an excellent story teller, and growing up with a Pennsylvania Dutch background it is fun to see some of it in print.
Thank you for your stories. The only problem is I can’t put them down and the house work has to wait.At least no one will fire me.
April 25th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
Mrs.Woodsmall,
I love your book’s and can’t wait to get the final one of the series. With each book i could’nt put them down and i use to hate reading but i love your book’s and they keep me intriged. Your story telling is so brilliant and i can’t wait to see what becomes of Hannah and will she end up with Paul or Martin? I have no complaints other than i wish it did’nt take so long to get the next book. I know it takes time to write a master piece, I am just anxious but that’s a good thing you know!
Keep the book’s comming,
Your Loyal Fan,
Tammy Owens
I am very fortunate to have quite a few paintings that my husband painted. Besides pictures and memories, they are all the children and I have of him since he died 2 years ago.
I read your first book in two days and went out today and purchased the 2nd one. I read it all afternoon and evening and can’t wait for the 3rd.
Dear Cindy,
I read your books because a family member loaned them to me. I cried and laughed throughout the books. They are beautiful books, and I can not wait to read the final one. You are a great writer. Thanks for sharing your stories with all of us.
Cindy, I have been an avid reader since I was three and am now thirtyeight. The books I read vary in topic, however, after reading When the Heart Cries (which I just happened to pick up at my local library) I couldn’t wait to read When the Morning Comes. I immediately logged on to the librarys website and reserved my copy as the ones they had were currently out. Waiting for When the Soul Mends is going to be extremely difficult as I am eager to see how it all works out for Hannah, Martin, Paul, Mary, Luke & Matthew. I am not too fond of Elle right now~!. Thank you for writing what you do and I look forward to your next set of Amish books that come out. God Bless!~
Sincerely,
Barb Weil
Hi Cindy,
I have some special crafts my youngest daughter made for me a few years ago. She was a big reader of the American Girls Magazine and the magazine was always loaded with ideas.
She made me a bouquet of flowers made of buttons and a lovely jar she decorated with dodads and glitter glue. I stil have these things displayed on my dresser in my bedroom.
No matter where you look in our home you will find handcrafted items in each room. It may be just a cake or a meal. When you walk into our home you can find a room that was made by my spouse and son-in-law each of us loves to read and listen to each others stories in this space “Our Quiet Room”, no television or radios allowed just a quiet fire in the cool months or a bright sunshine in summer. In this room we see all the love that our family shares.
I found your books by accident at my local library. I was not able to stop reading them. I could hardly put them down. It always amazes me when God can speak to you through a fiction book. Thank you for such a touching story line.
These are the best two books I think I have ever read. I live in Ohio and my community, over the past year, has become close to half Amish. The life they lead is so simple yet so fulfilling. These books were a great insight to the world that is starting to flourish around me. I am looking forward to the next book with much enthusiasm. Please hurry I really want to know how Hannah was received………….
April 30th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
I love this series. I am not sure I want it to end at book 3, but my daughter and I both can not wait to get our hands on it. We may have to order 2 so that we can read it at the same time. I was left wanting more especially after book two. I know you had to stop somewhere but I was not ready for it to end :O). The books are wonderful! Peace & Blessings for your family!
April 30th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
I just read both your books this past week! REMARKABLE WORK! Hannahs character is so captivating and really drew me into the story from the get go. God has really blessed you in your writings!
I LOVE your books!!
I have several handmade items that are special to me. I have a table made of sewing spindles that my grandfather made. I never met my grandfather but I can feel the love that went into that little table for his family. I also have several quilts from my mawmaw and my grandmaw-in-law. I used them often and love the memories that flow when I see them. Last but not the least is a crocheted dollie from my granny. It is on my dresser along with her bowl & pitcher set.
All of those items and more remind me of my family, our love and that slowing down and being a little simpler can bring a little more peace into our lives.
Can’t wait until Sept for the new book!!!!
May 1st, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I found out about this author through an article in my husband’s surveying magazine. The article was written by Cindy Woodsmall’s husband. I checked the books out and absolutely fell in love with the characters and storyline! I can’t wait until the next book comes out … and hopefully many more to come!
Hi Cindy! This is Jeffrey’s Jessica. I have a picture frame with a collage my sister made for me when we were pre-teens. It is a blue wooden frame with “Sisters” carved into it, and pictures of both of us at different times in our lives. I treasure it. I can’t wait for your next book!
Cindy,
Amish life has always been interesting to me since I married my husband, who came from Amish roots. I cherish handmade items such as the Cathedral Window baby quilt my mother and grandmother made for my son in 1975. I also have become a quilter, and have made a Rose of Sharon and Sunbonnet Sue queen-sized quilt for my home.
Your book, When the Heart Cries, captivated me. I enjoyed reading the story and learning that the characters were human, struggling with real issues in life. I read it in just a couple of days while working full-time! I rushed to the library to get, When the Morning Comes. Your writing grips the heart. I feel like I personally know the characters in your books. Thank you for using your gift to bless so many.
God bless you.
“Made with Love” is the definition of Handmade/ Homemade items, they are always the best, to think that the person took the time with his or her own hands with you in mind, is very humbling, you will carry them with you, always
May 6th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
I am eagerly awaiting the third book. The first two were books that I had a hard time putting down and I am sure the third one will be the same. I have know Amish and Mennonites since I join the Mennonite Church when I was 10 years old. I use to write to an amish girl in Yoder, KS. When I was about 13 I got to go the church conference and what a thrill it was to meet her; I even got to help her with her chores. It was a life time experence. I love Amish stories and have read most of them.
You are a very talented writer, so keep bring us stories. I would love to win an Amish Quilt.
Hugs,
Rose
I LOVE your books & I can’t wait until Sept to read your newest! I have been recommending your books to everyone I know, b/c I know they will love them too.
As far as something homemade, the homemade items in my home that I treasure the most are the little pieces of art my daughter (4 yrs old) draws for me. They are all over my refrigerator, and some places on my walls before she knew that was a no-no
May 7th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
My sister told me about your books and I will be reading them soon. We lived near Amish country in OH and there were many Amish in our county as well. We met a couple when we first moved there who had left the Amish and now have a ministry to reach the Amish. I will tell them about your books. Can’t wait to read them.
I have loved reading When the Heart Cries and When the Morning Comes. Your stories are so interesting I couldn’t put the books down. I am eagerly awaiting the third book.
May 9th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
While searching for a new Beverly Lewis book I stumbled upon your first novel, When the Heart Cries, and I could not put it down. I was through the first chapter before leaving the store. Your writing is captivating and I can actually picture Hannah in my mind. I am currently reading, When the Morning Comes, and can’t put it down either.
I have always had a fascination with the Amish and you bring them to life. Your story telling is second to none.
Thanks for the wonderful stories that I have also shared with my Mother, Sister, and close friends who also have loved them as much as I have.
Thanks Again
May 10th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
I have enjoyed your first two books and am eagerly awaiting the third. These are books I will keep and re-read again and again. Thank you.
May 11th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Your first book took my breath away and I cried as Hannah’s world broke apart. I bought your second book, When Morning Comes on its first day of release. Read and didn’t stop til I was done. I was so heart broken not to be able to finish the trilogy right away. Maybe even prepare you for the many directions the story could take. But time has a way of letting you reflect, imagine, and build anticipation. Oddley enough it allows you to think about the time that passed in this characters life from beginning to end and how time sometimes changes things in directions you couldn’t even imagine. It adds more depth thats real to the story. And yes I will be in line on day one just as my bookstore opens. I will block out the time to spend with Hannah and watch her journey unfold uninterrupted. It really is not often a story can be so captivating. I await the journey with great anticipation. Never before have gotten so attracted to a story. Blessings to you, your family and for all your future stories. Thank you for sharing your imaginations and talent with us.
I just finished the 2nd book in the “Sisters of the Quilt” series. I truly loved both and am looking forward to the 3rd book to see what happens. Thanks Cindy and I hope you keep the series going.
My most treasured items are a ceramic Christmas tree my youngest son made when he was in the 2nd grade. It is truly very beautiful and my husband and I were shocked at how awesome it was when he gave it to us as a Christmas present many many years ago. My other favorite from my oldest son when he was in the 2nd or 3rd grade was a letter he wrote to us stating he loved us more than a hundred dollars!
May 14th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
I am thrilled with your first book. Keep writing. I just wished they came out sooner. I am in love with AMish fiction. You are one of the greats. Beautiful plot and great inside information.
May 15th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Cindy, my family began our homeschooling journey about 4 years ago and have never looked back. I was so thrilled to see that you were a long time homeschooler as well.
In answer to your question about a special homemade item … My mother has a very special sampler that was made by a 9yo ancester back in the 1800s … it has been passed down for generations to the oldest girl in the family … one day it will be mine and then my daughter’s.
I have been entranced in Amish fiction for the past 2 1/2 years and have read all of Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetter. While visiting Lancaster County last week I came across your books and had to add you to my favorites list. I can’t wait to experience your Amish-touched writings.
God Bless you and your family
I cannot wait until september! I finished both books in two days! I saw the second book on the front shelf of the library and the cover alone was so interesting. When I discovered there was a prior installment I was on a mission! I could not put them down! Thank you for such an enlightening and imaginative story!
May 15th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
I have read both, When the Heart Cries and When the Morning Comes. Will be ordering the next in the series, When The Soul Mends. I love them all. We lost a son at the age of 13 to a tragic death. When him and his brother were small they loved making little christmas ornaments for our tree. I will treasure them the remainder of my life. They were little stars made from popcicle sticks and colored yarn. God Bless.
May 16th, 2008 at 10:58 am
I just finished When the Heart Cries and couldn’t wait to start When the Morning Comes. This is a great story of humanness: mistakes, judgmental attitudes, fear, love, family, etc. And yet through it all God is still a God of love, forgiveness and acceptance. These stories help me to see my own humanity and know that God loves me anyway. Thank you for writing sure uplifting stories.
May 17th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
I Love your books!!! I enjoy curling up on the couch with a book of yours and rain pouring down outside. Your spiritual connections with God help me to see how we can all do things better and show more forgiveness, love, and acceptance. I enjoy your books When the Heart Cries and Morning Comes; I hope this series doesn’t end. It is GREAT.
I have some handmade items that my mother-n-law has given me and my husband. It is a hope chest made from cherry and has pine inside. It is the most beautiful piece I have ever seen made. She also thought enough of us to give us a handmade dollie from my husbands great grandmother in the 1050’s using chicken feed sack string. I am afraid to use that. We have several other handmade it such as quilts and afghans that my mother has had made for us or afghans that I have made for ourselves or our son. I love all our handmade items.
May 17th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
The library had your first book. It was very popular. Then they requested that the librarian get the second book. It was very popular, too. We all like to read about the Amish. You make your stories so real. We are waiting for the 3rd and final book in Sept.
May 17th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
When I was about 5years old, I stayed with an Amish family while my mom was in the hospital. The Mrs. Zook and her oldest daughter began to catch my interest in crotcheing. Years later when I was abou 13 years old I told my Mom that I really wanted to learn so that I could make a blanket for my then “soon to arrive sister”. I made that blanket and I have not stopped crotcheting since!!
Please enter me in your contest.
God Bless
I just love your books. I have read the first two and can’t wait till the third book “When the Soul Mends” comes out. There is a lot of
stuff that is around my house that is special to me. My Mom made me an afghan and has made one for my son. My mother-in-law has made me two baskets and my sister-in-law has made me a lap quilt and one for my son, but the thing that I love the most is the pictures of my Mom took of my son and framed for me them for me and gave them to me this past Mother’s Day. They look so old fashion.
May 18th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
I just read When the Heart Cries and can’t wait to read When The Morning Comes. I have read only a few books where the story stays with me for days after I’ve read it, and this is one of them. I love to read books about the Amish. I will definitely read more of your books. My Mom passed away almost 13 years ago and her sister passed away 1 1/2 years ago. I have crocheted items from my mom and cross stitch pictures from my aunt that I cherish.
May 18th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
A friend gave me your books for Christmas and I’m hooked! I was very excited to see a release date for your new book. I can’t wait to see what happens next! I started a blanket when my second daughter was born…I finally finished it for my third and it’s her favorite bedtime item.
May 20th, 2008 at 10:28 am
I read the first 2 books in a matter of a week, I actually had a hard time putting them down. I can’t wait for the next book. I have several hand made items afghans and a quilt. I love all of them. I can’t wait for the next book.
May 20th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
I ran across your books after reading both Oake, Brunstetter, and Lewis. Your books are amazing, and I am looking forward to the next release.
I am a high school English teacher, and I recommend your books any time I get the chance. I also introduced my mother and grandmother to them - they both enjoy the books.
An Amish community is springing up near my hometown, and I look forward to viewing their beautiful crafts. My grandmother, mother and I love to quilt and are always in awe of the beautiful creations of others.
May 21st, 2008 at 10:40 am
I live in an area with several amish families and I shop at their bakery, which I don’t need too, but that is beside the point. I love the amish and love reading about them, fact or fiction. Your books are wonderful and I don’t know if I can wait until September or not. I guess I will have to! They live a very simple life and according to the Bible, that is what kind of life we need to live. I almost envy them at times.
Thanks Cindy, you are a wonderful author. God Bless!
May 21st, 2008 at 11:30 am
My daughter gave me her books to read. I so enjoyed it, and couldn’t wait to read the 2nd.She has passed on to me the 2nd. We both can hardly wait for When the Soul Mends. Thanks to Cindy for a truly enjoyable series.
Well, I just finished reading When the Morning Comes, and believe me, I have not done much work this week, at home or at my place of business (I own the business) because I could not put the book down. Last week, I read When the Heart Cries and it was WONDERFUL! Can’t wait till Sept. 16th gets here. We live in the Shenandoah Valley of Va. where their are lots of Amish and Mennonites in our area and they are wonderful people to know and visit with. Your stories are so interesting about them. Please keep up the great writing. I need to pass these books on to others so they can enjoy them also.
God be with you and your family.
It was so good to see you the other night at Celebration. You are such an inspiring speaker. I will never look at a quilt again without your speech in my mind. Cindy,
I have thoroughly enjoyed both “When the Heart Cries” and “When the Morning Comes”. I CANNOT wait until September!
My grandmother crocheted a baby blanket for my youngest daughter when she was born. My daughter is almost 7 now and “blankie” is still very much a part of her life. My grandmother passed away five years ago and that makes the blanket even more special!
May 22nd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
I have so enjoyed both of your books “When The Heart Cries” and “When The Morning Comes” and can’t wait to read the next one in the trilogy.
Please keep writing about Amish life. I love the wholesome characters and learning about how the Amish think and live. Thanks so much. You have been given a wonderful gift of writing.
May 23rd, 2008 at 11:26 pm
I absolutely have loved reading the sisters of the quilt series. I have stayed up too many nights reading when I should have been sleeping! As far as homemade things close to our hearts- My grandmother made a quilt and valances for my first child’s room, her first great-granddaughter. I will treasure them forever.
May 25th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
I have a cradle that was my great-grandmother’s. I’m not sure who made it, but I cherish it because it was hers and has been in the family for a long, long time.
May 26th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Hello! I just want to say how much I love your books; I can’t wait until the new one comes out. I am a 20 year old newlywed who will be celebrating her 1st anniversary with a wonderful man of God on June 2nd. He thinks it is so cute how much I LOVE books about the Amish. But your books, out of all I’ve read, are by far my favorite stories. I cannot wait to find out who Hannah will end up with at the end. I guess I have to wait until September.
God Bless!
After reading all of Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetter’s books about the Amish, a friend suggested your book When the Heart Cries. I usually don’t read a series of books until all of them are released, but I had nothing to read and your book was in my hands. I was absorbed by the end of the first chapter and despite telling myself to wait, I bought the second book as soon as it came out and read it in a weekend. Your writing is fresh and realistic. Being a survivor myself, you did an exceptional job of portraying Hannah in a way that showed her heart and her path to being a survivor. I can’t wait for book three to be on the shelves in September!
God Bless!
My mom left me her diary and photo album of many generations of family. They help me remember her in lots of detail. I will treasure them always.
Hi Cindy, I first learned of your books through “Romantic Times Book Reviews”. I enjoy books about the Amish. I was reared by my grandparents and after my grandmother passed away, I was sad to realize I had not gotten some of her recipes.A few months after her passing I was in the library and came upon an Amish cookbook. I could not believe my eyes…there were the recipes of my grandmother, rivel soup, slippy flapjacks, and my favorite, milk pie. My family is not Amish and I do not know why she made these meals, but they sure were good. She made quilts and baby clothes for my first two children before her passing. Another item I have is a handmade pie safe from a former sister-in-law’s fammily. Really looking forward to WHEN THE SOUL MENDS. Thank you so much for this wonderful-good story. Valeria Stratton
I loved the first book, and am currently working on the second. I was disappointed to learn that I have to wait until September to read the 3rd book, they are sooooo good!!!!
I loved the 1st two books and can’t wait for the 3rd to come out in September!
May 28th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
I have a handmade item in my home that I cherish! My Dad made a small wooden box for me out of special African wood and put my ititials on the box. It has hinges and a lock and key as well. It is the perfect size for small treasures or a journal. He gave the gift to me at Christmas around the time I was 13. I LOVED it then and I LOVE it now! It is very special to have a gift in my own home that my Dad made for me. It is even more special because after I got married, I moved further away from my parents and do not see them as much as I would like, but I am reminded of my Dad daily as I see the special box he made me.
I just returned from a 2 week trip to Holmes County, Ohio and Lancaster, Pa. My friend, Marie and I have made this trip for the last three years, while her husband patiently waits for us to visit farm markets and stores. We found 2 older Amish sisters that make and sell their homecanned produce, fresh produce, pies and sticky buns (to die for) who are so sweet and have shared their recipes with us. While in Strasburg, we found your books at a Christian bookstore, and have enjoyed them so much and we look forward to Book 3, and of course, many more books from your wonderful Amish heart. It is such a pleasure to read books that capture our hearts and and to be able to read a book without having to skip words and scenes that are embarassing and really just page fillers having no real purpose in the story.
May 28th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Dear Cindy,
I pray that God continue to bless you in your writings. I have developed an unbelievable desire to learn everything I can about the Amish. I am drawn in a way that even I can’t explain. I simply count the days until “When the Soul Mends” comes out.
Praise to the Lord for your special gift.
May 28th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
I am so sold on your books, the best that I have read by far!!! I can’t wait until September for the rest of Hannah’s story. The first two of your books have left me wanting more, I could hardly put them down to work around the home!! I love reading about the Amish way of life, I live in the Northwestern part of PA and we have the “Old Order” as well as the Mennonite Order living in our area. I have always been fasinated with the Amish and you really make them come alive and your stories are the best I have read yet!!! I do hope that you write many more books about the Amish. And I really enjoy sequels. Just wish you could write faster!!! You are a GREAT author. Congrats to you and keep up the good work. I look forward to September and I plan on reading every book that you publish. Thank you so much!
May 29th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
WOW, is all I can say! I couldn’t put the first two books down! I justfell in love with Hannah. Its so hard to wait till Sept. But I know I won’t want to let go of Hannah. Thats my weak spot when to I come to the end of a series. I worked in a gift shop and had time to read alot, everyone would ask what I was reading. I’ve read alot of Amish books. The Plain people are so fasinating and lovely at the same time. So I’ve got a another person reading Amish books. We both think this series has been the best. She can’t wait until Sept. either. I hope u are working on another series as we speak. Can’t wait! Thanks Cindy!
Hope & Peace, Vickie
I came here today to tell you I read both your books and have posted reviews for you on Celebrity Cafe, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and Christianbook. I can hardly wait to get your newest book in Sept. It is a must have.
I have an afghan that was handmade for me three years ago by a prayer partner I met on the internet. We have never met in person but are close friends. I was going through my first ordeal with a rebellious daughter and she became a prayer partner who saw me through three hard years. We are still prayer partners. I treasure that afghan and use it a lot.
God Bless and continue to annoint you in your writing. It was so encouraging to me while I’m suffering with illness and hardships. It helps keep me focused.
Enter me to win.
Dear Cindy, I just had my 64th birthday and have only lately learned to like to read and have fallen in love with the Amish way of life and the stories of them. Please keep up the wonderful inspirational books. Can’t wait to find out what happens in Hannahs life. God Bless!
These are some of the best books I have ever read. I love to go to Lancaster , PA and see the Amish. I can hardlt wait for the 3rd book and hope there are many more to follow.
